Has Photoroom imported multiple objects on the same layer? Learn how to put them on separate layers in this article.

When you import a photo into Photoroom, you might get several foreground objects on the same layer. In some cases, this can pose a problem as it makes it more difficult to edit your design. For example, if you have a photo of two dogs and they are both on the same layer, you can't move one dog without moving the other.

There is no way to split a layer into separate layers, but we do have a workaround for getting objects on to different layers. Using our 2 dogs example, the workaround will let you create a design that has each dog on a separate layer.

We explain how to do it in the sections below.

On iPhone and iPad

To make foreground objects appear on separate layers:

(Video shows Photoroom on iPhone)

  1. On the Create page, select Start from photo.

  2. Choose a photo to import. Photoroom automatically removes its background during the import.

  3. Select a template for the background.

  4. Select Layers. You will see how Photoroom has separated the information in the photo into different layers. There is a background layer and at least one foreground layer.

We're going to assume that one foreground layer has multiple foreground objects on it. You want to separate them on to different layers.

  5. Select a layer that has multiple foreground objects on it.

  6. Select Edit Cutout.

  7. Use Edit Cutout to remove an object that you want to be on another layer. For example, if you had a layer with 2 dogs on it, you could select Manual and then use Erase to remove one of the dogs. Select Done when you are finished.

  8. Select Done to exit the layer and then Done again to exit the layer settings.

  9. Select Export to save your design.

  10. Select New design.

  11. Choose the same photo to import.

  12. Select the transparent background as the template.

  13. Select Layers.

  14. Select the layer that contains the foreground object you removed in step 7.

  15. Select Edit Cutout.

  16. Use Edit Cutout to remove a different object. For example, if you were using a layer with 2 dogs on it, you would remove the other dog this time. Select Done when you are finished.

  17. Select Done to exit the layer and then Done again to exit the layer settings.

  18. Select Export to save your design in Photoroom and also save the image to your camera roll. Select Done.

  19. Select your first design to open it in the editor.

  20. Select Insert and choose to insert the image file of your second design. Photoroom removes the background of the second design image. You now have one design with both foreground objects on separate layers.

  21. Select Export to save your design.

You can use the same technique to divide images into many separate layers, if needed.
