How to use Product Staging to show your products in realistic AI-generated scenes

Show how your product will be used by your customers with Photoroom's Product Staging feature. Just upload a product photo and the Product Staging AI will create a realistic scene automatically.

For example, let's say you have a photo of a colorful mug. You import it into Product Staging and get a realistic scene showing the mug being used. You can use that realistic scene as a design or you can remove its background and apply a different one.

Three images side-by-side. Image 1 is a photo of a colorful mug on a kitchen counter. Image 2 is an AI-generated image of a woman in the garden, reading a book while drinking from the mug. Image 3 is the same woman as image 2, but the background has been replaced with yellow.

Working with Product Staging

When using Product Staging, be aware that:

  • It is currently available in selected countries on the Web App and iOS versions of Photoroom. It is coming soon to Android. For more details, see Photoroom and OpenAI gpt images.

  • AI images can have differences to the original photo, especially with more complex patterns, shapes and text. Be aware that AI images are "interpretations" of the source content and are not exact matches.

  • There are limits on how many Product Staging images you can generate. For details, see Photoroom and OpenAI gpt images.

On iPhone and iPad

To use Product Staging on the iPhone and iPad version of Photoroom:

  1. Select Content.

  2. Select the workspace you want to work in.

  3. Select AI Tools.

  4. Select Product Staging.

  5. Select + Add your photo and then upload a photo of your product.

  6. Set the dimensions of the image that Photoroom will create. Choose from:

    • Square

    • Portrait (2:3 ratio)

    • Landscape (3:2 ratio).

  7. Select the arrow button.

Photoroom will generate 2 images. It should take approximately 1 minute to complete and the progress is shown as percentages.

  8. When you have 2 images, select the one you want to use. Alternatively, select the arrow button to make alternatives. Note that there is a limit on how many images you can generate (for details, see Photoroom and OpenAI gpt images).

  9. Use Remove background to include or exclude the background from the AI image.

If you remove the background, you will get a design that has an empty background layer and the foreground objects, such as your product, on another layer. Later, you'll be able to add a background of your own choice, such as a color background or an AI background.

If you keep the background, you will get the entire AI image on a single layer in your design.

  10. Select Use image.

  11. [Optional] Use the editing features to make additional changes, such as add text, shapes, and other design elements. To learn how to use the editing features, see Features and tools.

  12. [Optional] Select Export. Use the export options to save your design as an image file and to share it with other people.

  13. Select X to save your design and close the editor.

On Web App

To use Product Staging on the Web App version of Photoroom:

  1. Select the workspace you want to work in.

  2. Select AI Tools.

  3. Select Product Staging.

  4. Select + Add your photo and then upload a photo of your product.

  5. Set the dimensions of the image that Photoroom will create. Choose from:

    • Square

    • Portrait (3:2 ratio)

    • Landscape (3:2 ratio).

  6. Select Generate.

Photoroom will generate 2 images. It should take approximately 1 minute to complete and the progress is shown as percentages.

  7. When you have 2 images, select the one you want to use. Alternatively, select Generate to make alternatives. Note that there is a limit on how many images you can generate (for details, see Photoroom and OpenAI gpt images).

Tip: To download a generated design as an image file, select the dotted menu
( ... ) for the design and then select Download.

  8. Use Remove background to include or exclude the AI background from the design.

If you remove the background, you will get a design that has a white background layer and the foreground objects, such as your product, on another layer. Later, you'll be able to replace the background in the editor.

If you keep the background, you will get the entire AI image on a single layer in your design. The design also has a white background layer, behind the AI image layer.

  9. [Optional] Use these options to change the image:

    • Retouch to remove parts of the image that you don't want. Set the brush size and draw over the area you want to remove. This option is only available when the background layer is present.

To learn more about Retouch, see Remove unwanted objects with the Retouch tool.

    • Edit Cutout to erase or restore parts of the image. This is only available when the background layer has been removed.

To learn more about Edit Cutout, see Add and remove parts of an image with edit cutout.

    • Resize to change the dimensions for the image. When you select Resize, the image is shown in the editor. From there, you can set a different size for the image.

  10. Select Use this image (only required if you did not use Retouch, Edit Cutout or Resize).

  11. [Optional] Use the editing features to make additional changes, such as add text, shapes, and other design elements. To learn how to use the editing features, see Features and tools.

  12. [Optional] Select the download icon. Enter a name for the download file and choose the image file type. Select Download.

  13. Select Home to save your design and exit the editor.
