One of the most common pro photography effects is to blur part of an image, typically, the background. It is beautiful, but most importantly, it helps with storytelling by:

  • Focusing on what's important - your subject - by creating an uncluttered background

  • Giving a subtle idea of the context. A blur can suggest a mood of the location without creating too much "visual noise".

With traditional photography, you may need expensive equipment to create blur effects. But Photoroom makes it easy.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. On the Create page, select Start from photo and then choose an image to import. Choose a template for the design, for example, Original image to keep the background from a photo.

Alternatively, you can select a design from Your Content and edit that.

  2. Select Layers.

  3. Select the layer that you want to blur.

  4. Scroll down to the Blur setting and switch it on.

  5. Choose a type of blur from the list. There are several blur effects available, and each produces a different effect.

  6. Use the slider below the blur types to increase or decrease the amount of blur.

  7. Select Done on the layer when you are happy with the blur effect.

  8. Select Done on the Layers settings.

  9. Select Export and use the export settings to save and share your design.

Tip: You can use other effects on the blurred layer too. For example, you could use the Adjust settings to change the brightness or warmth of a blurred layer.
