Do you work in Figma and wish you could use Photoroom's background features in your designs? Well now you can, thanks to the Photoroom plug-in.

With the Photoroom plug-in, you can:

  • Remove the background from a frame

  • Add an AI-generated background to a frame.

Each action costs 1 credit from your API credits. Each user gets 10 API credits per month free. For more credits, you will need to subscribe to the API plan.

Set up the Photoroom plug-in

To set up the Photoroom plug-in:

  1. Create a Photoroom account (unless you already have one). You can use a free account or a Pro account.

  2. Create a Figma account or log in to your existing Figma account.

  3. Select Open in... and then select New File or any of your existing files.

  4. Select the Figma menu.

  5. Select Plugins.

  6. Select Manage Plugins.

  7. Search for Photoroom.

  8. Select Open.

  9. Select the link to the API dashboard.

    https://app.photoroom.com/api-dashboard

  10. If you are prompted to do so, select Enable the Photoroom API for free. Follow the on-screen instructions.

If you only see the API Key details, ignore this step and continue from step 12.

  11. Copy the Live API key.

Note: If you are using the Photoroom Sandbox Mode for testing, use the Sandbox key instead (see Sandbox mode).

  12. Go back to the Figma tab in your browser and paste the API Key into the field.

Your Figma instance is now connected to your Photoroom account. When you use the Photoroom plug-in in Figma, each background you remove or create will cost 1 credit. When you create a Photoroom account, you are given 10 credits free. When you have used those credits you will need to buy more.

Remove a background using the Photoroom plug-in

To remove the background of an image in your Figma design, follow the instructions below:

  1. In Figma, edit a design or create a new one.

  2. Select the Figma menu.

  3. Select Plugins.

  4. Select Photoroom and then Open.

  5. Select the image that has the background you want to remove.

  6. Select Remove Background on the Photoroom plug-in.

Photoroom removes the background from your image. This costs 1 credit. If you do not have enough credits, you will need to subscribe to the API plan or wait until your next 10 free credits are applied (every month).

Create an AI Background using the Photoroom plug-in

You can use the Photoroom plug-in to add AI-generated backgrounds to an image in Figma.

  1. In Figma, edit a design or create a new one.

  2. Select the Figma menu.

  3. Select Plugins.

  4. Select Photoroom and then Open.

  5. Select the image that has the background you want to change.

  6. Select AI Backgrounds on the Photoroom plug-in.

  7. You now have a choice:

    • To get an AI-generated background based on an existing scene, use the Scenes tab. Choose a scene and Photoroom will use that as the basis for the AI background.

    • To ask the AI to create a more specific image, select the Create a scene tab.

In the Prompt field, enter a description of the background you want, for example, "a star-filled sky".

In the Negative prompt field, enter a description of anything that you want to exclude from the image. For example, if your prompt is for "star-filled sky" you could enter "moon" as a Negative prompt.

  8. Select Generate Image.

Photoroom generates a background for your image based on your selected Scene or prompt. This costs 1 credit. If you do not have enough credits, you will need to subscribe to the API plan or wait until your next 10 free credits are applied (every month).

Add credits for the Photoroom plug-in

Every month, Photoroom gives all users 10 free API credits. You can use these with the Figma plug-in.

If you run out of credits, you can either:

  • Subscribe to a monthly API plan for more credits

  • Wait until the next month, when we will give you 10 more credits.

To subscribe to the API plan:

  1. Log in to Photoroom and select your API dashboard.

  2. Select Subscribe.

  3. Choose a plan.

  4. Select Subscribe.

  5. Enter your payment details and confirm your subscription.

Photoroom will add the credits to your account.
