Learn how to use Retouch to remove parts of an Instant Background

If the AI creates an Instant Background that is great apart from one or two details, you can use Retouch to make it perfect. Retouch lets you remove selected parts of the background.

For instructions, select the link for your device:


On iPhone and iPad

To remove parts of an Instant Background on iPhone or iPad:

  1. On the Create page, select Start from photo and choose an image to import. Alternatively, you can select Your Content and edit one of your existing designs instead.

  2. Select:

    1. Instant Backgrounds if you are creating a new design.

    2. Backgrounds if you are editing an existing design.

  3. Choose one of the suggested Instant Backgrounds.

    Alternatively, if you want to create a custom Instant Background, select the pencil icon in the top-right corner and then use prompts to create an Instant Background.

  4. Choose the Instant Background that you want to use.

  5. Select the Background layer.

  6. Select Retouch.

  7. Use the Brush width slider to control the size of the brush.

  8. Paint over the area of the image that you want to remove. You may need to go over the area several times and extend your paint area further into the background to remove it completely.

  9. Select Done.

  10. Select Export and use the options to save, rename, and share your design.


On Android

To remove parts of an Instant Background on Android:

  1. On the Create page, select Start from photo and choose an image to import. Alternatively, you can select Your Content and edit one of your existing designs instead.

  2. Select:

    1. Instant Backgrounds if you are creating a new design.

    2. Backgrounds if you are editing an existing design.

  3. Choose one of the suggested Instant Backgrounds.

    Alternatively, if you want to create a custom Instant Background, select Search for background and then Create a background. Use prompts to create an Instant Background.

  4. Choose the Instant Background that you want to use.

  5. Select the Background layer.

  6. Select Retouch.

  7. Use the Brush width slider to control the size of the brush.

  8. Paint over the area of the image that you want to remove. You may need to go over the area several times and extend your paint area further into the background to remove it completely.

  9. Select Done.

  10. Select Export and use the options to save, rename, and share your design.


On Web App

To remove parts of an Instant Background on the Web App (desktop):

  1. On the Create page, select Start from photo and choose an image to import. Alternatively, you can select Your Content and edit one of your existing designs instead.

  2. Select Instant Backgrounds.

  3. Choose one of the suggested Instant Backgrounds.

    Alternatively, if you want to create a custom Instant Background, select the pencil icon in the top-right corner of the Instant Backgrounds panel. You can then use prompts to create an Instant Background.

  4. Choose the Instant Background that you want to use.

  5. Select the Background layer.

  6. Select Retouch.

  7. Use the Brush width slider to control the size of the brush.

  8. Paint over the area of the image that you want to remove. You may need to go over the area several times and extend your paint area further into the background to remove it completely.

  9. Select Confirm.

  10. Select Download to download a local copy in your browser. PhotoRoom also saves your design to your workspace.
