Photoroom includes a variety of background features designed to help you create the perfect backdrop. You can use AI to make your vision a reality or you can upload your own background or pick a simple color. Whatever you choose, Photoroom makes creating a background quick and easy!
In this article, we'll give you an overview of the different types of background you can use. We'll guide you to the articles that explain how to create the backgrounds too.
AI Backgrounds
Why spend time creating your own backgrounds when Photoroom's AI can do it for you? From photorealism to a variety of artistic styles, it can create the perfect background for your designs.
You can create an AI background by entering a text description of the background you want. The text description is called a "prompt".
Alternatively, you can choose an AI background from Photoroom's pre-made categories.

Template backgrounds
When you import a new image, Photoroom removes its background automatically (unless you choose to skip background removal). When the background is removed, you can choose to apply a template to your design.
Photoroom has a collection of templates that you can choose from and you can also create your own custom templates. Each template is a pre-made design that can include a background layer and one or more foreground layers. When you apply a template to a photo, a layer in the template is swapped out for the main subject of your photo.
The following images show different templates applied to a photo of a scent bottle.
Here's how it works:
You import a photo and Photoroom removes its background.
You choose a template. Each template contains design elements.
Photoroom takes the main subject of your photo and inserts it into a new design. It also adds the layers from the template to your design.
You now have a design that you can edit. You can make changes to any part of your design, including the parts that came from the template. Change text, colors, resize the design, add graphics ... it's up to you!
To learn more, see the articles about Templates.
Color backgrounds
Of course, if you just want a simple, single-color background, that's possible too. You can replace the background and use the color selector to choose the color you want. Alternatively, choose a color from your brand kit.
To learn how to use a color as a background layer, see Replace a background.
To learn how to use color as a background for a batch of images, see Change the background of multiple images with the Batch feature.
Image backgrounds
You can replace a background with any image file, so if you have a background image already, you can use that.
Here is an example of a photo of the interior of a luxury scent store used as a background. We used the settings on the background layer to give it darker shadows and a warm tint.
You could even make an AI Image, download it as an image file and then use that as a background. That can be useful if you want to use AI to make a background, but you want it to be a static background instead of one that updates when you move foreground layers.
To learn how to use an image as a background layer, see Replace a background.
Transparent backgrounds
Photoroom makes it easy to make the background of images transparent. You can let Photoroom remove the background automatically and then apply the Transparent template or you can erase the background layer.
If you're creating a new design, use the Transparent template.
For instructions, see Create a design with a transparent background.
If you're editing an existing design, erase the background layer. Visually, this has the same effect as making the background transparent.
On the Web App, you also have the option of applying the Transparent template to existing designs.
For instructions, see Apply a transparent background to an existing design.
If you're editing a batch, apply the Transparent template to the batch.
