Add a shape to a design

Learn how to add circles, squares, rectangles, triangles and other shapes to your designs

You can add shapes to your designs to create patterns, multi-color backgrounds, eye-catching labels and more. Photoroom has a range of shapes for you to choose from, including regular shapes like circles and rectangles as well as specially designed shapes for stickers, banners and labels.

When you add a shape, the shape has its own layer with settings for editing the shape.


On iPhone and iPad

To add shapes to a design on the iPhone or iPad version of Photoroom, follow the instructions below. The video shows a design being created from scratch, with rectangles and circles being added to create the finished design.

  1. Select Content.

  2. Select the workspace you want to work in.

  3. Either:

    • Select New design and upload a photo. Then choose a template for the photo, such as the white template, black template or transparent template. When you have chosen a template, Photoroom opens your design in the editor.

    • Select one of your existing designs to open it in the editor.

  4. [Optional] Use Resize to change the size of the design.

  5. Select Insert.

  6. Scroll down to the Shapes section and choose a category, for example Classics.

  7. Select the shape you want to add to your design.

  8. Use gestures to move and resize the shape.

  9. Use the layer settings for the shape to edit it. There are many things you can do, including changing its color, setting it to be an outline instead of a solid shape, adding texture, and applying a shadow effect. Select Done when you are finished.

  10. Select Layers.

  11. Use the layers settings to move your shape behind or in front of other layers on the design. To learn more about using layers, see the layers articles.

  12. Repeat steps 5-11 inclusive until you have added and edited all of the shapes you want on your design.

  13. [Optional] Select Export. Use the export settings to save your design as an image file and to share your design with others.

  14. Select X to save your design and exit the editor.


On Android

To add shapes to a design on the Android version of Photoroom, follow the instructions below. The video shows a design being created from scratch, with rectangles and circles being added to create the finished design.

  1. Select Content.

  2. Select the workspace you want to work in.

  3. Either:

    • Select New design and upload a photo. Then choose a template for the photo, such as the white template, black template or transparent template. When you have chosen a template, Photoroom opens your design in the editor.

    • Select one of your existing designs to open it in the editor.

  4. [Optional] Use Resize to change the size of the design.

  5. Select Insert.

  6. Scroll down to the Shapes section and choose a category, for example Classics.

  7. Select the shape you want to add to your design.

  8. Use gestures to move and resize the shape.

  13. [Optional] Select Export. Use the export settings to save your design as an image file and to share your design with others.

  14. Select the back arrow to save your design and exit the editor.


On Web App

To add shapes to a design on the Web App version of Photoroom, follow the instructions below. The video shows a design being created from scratch, with rectangles and circles being added to create the finished design.

  1. Select the workspace you want to work in.

  2. Either:

    • Select Create new and then Select a photo. Choose a photo to upload. Photoroom opens your photo in a new design in the editor.

    • Select one of your existing designs to open it in the editor.

  3. [Optional] Use Resize to change the size of the design.

  4. Select Insert.

  5. Scroll down to the Shapes section and choose a category, for example Classics.

  6. Select the shape you want to add to your design.

  7. Drag the shape to where you want it to be and use the handles to resize it.

  8. Use the layer settings for the shape to edit it. There are many things you can do, including changing its color, setting it to be an outline instead of a solid shape, adding texture, and applying a shadow effect.

  9. Select the gray background of the editor, off the canvas of your design. The sidebar changes to display the layers in order.

  10. Drag and drop a layer to move your shape behind or in front of other layers on the design. To learn more about using layers, see the layers articles.

  11. Repeat steps 5-11 inclusive until you have added and edited all of the shapes you want on your design.

  12. [Optional] Select Download. Enter a name for the image file and select its format and then select Download. Photoroom downloads the image file in your browser.

  13. [Optional] Select Share and use the options to share your design with others.

  14. Select Home to save your design and exit the editor.

    Home is a house icon.
