Photoroom's Retouch feature has a Fill mode that lets you add AI-generated objects to your designs. It's a quick and convenient way to add objects to enhance the realism or mood of a design. It's also useful for getting a better balance in your designs if they have too much "white space".

For example, here we used Retouch Fill mode to add a TV to the wall in an image. First we selected the area to fill (image 1), then we entered a description of the obect we wanted (image 2). The AI generated some images of TVs (image 3).

3 side-by-side images. Image 1 shows a design with a chair and area of the background is drawn over. Image 2 shows a text prompt for a tv. Image 3 shows an ai-generated tv added to the design.

Follow the instructions below to try it out for yourself.

Note: Retouch Fill is available on iPhone and iPad. It is being gradually rolled out on Android, so may be available to some users. It is not yet available on the Web App.

On iPhone and iPad

The following instructions and video show Retouch Fill for editing a background. You can use the same techniques when using Retouch Fill on other layers (only the steps to get to the Retouch option will be different).

The Retouch feature is available:

  • For most layers of a design, including backgrounds.

  • When you create AI images such as product photography and use the Change something option during the workflow.

  1. Select Content.

  2. Select the workspace you want to work in.

  3. Select the design that you want to edit.

  4. Select the layer you want to edit, for example, the Background layer.

  5. Select Retouch.

Note: The location of the Retouch option varies. If you don't see it, scroll down the settings as it is displayed towards the bottom for some layers. Retouch is not available on single color background layers.

  6. Select the Fill tab.
This is an important step as the Erase tab is selected by default and that will remove content from your design.

  7. Use the slider to set the brush size.

  8. Draw over the area where you want the AI-generated image to appear.

  9. Enter a description of the image you want the AI to add. In our example, we used "Wall-mounted TV showing a nature documentary".

  10. Select the purple and white arrow button to generate AI images.

  11. Either:

    • Select one of the generated images to see how it looks in the main image.

    • Select the pencil icon next to the description and then edit the description.

    • Select the plus icon + to get the AI to generate more variations.

  12. When you have an image you are happy with, select it and then select Apply.

  13. Select Done.

  14. [Optional] Use the editor settings to make further changes, such as add text or add graphics.

  15. [Optional] Select Export to save your design as an image file on your device. You can also use the export settings to share your design.

  16. Select X to save your design and exit the editor.

Note: Retouch Fill mode counts towards your export limit for designs with AI features.

Tip: AI Fill is another feature you can use to get the AI to change a design. Find out more in Change part of an image with AI Fill.
