Create a design with a transparent background

Learn how to replace the background of a photo with a transparent background

In this article, we'll show you how to upload a photo and replace its background with a transparent background. Images with transparent backgrounds are ideal for adding as layers in other designs and as reusable images in your brand kit.

Note: To make the background of an existing design transparent, you can apply the transparent template to it or delete its background layer.

On iPhone and iPad

To replace the original background with a transparent background:​

  1. Select the Space you want to work in.

  2. Select Start from photo and choose a photo to import.

  3. Wait for Photoroom to remove the background of your image automatically.

    Do not select Skip background removal.

  4. Select the transparent template in the Classics collection.

    Photoroom opens your design in the editor.

  5. [Optional] If the background removal is not as precise as you need, use the Cutout feature to edit it.

  6. [Optional] Select the foreground object in your image and move it to the position you want. When you select the object, its layer settings are shown.

  7. [Optional] Use the editor to make further changes, such as add text, shadows, graphics, and more.

  8. Select Export.

    Photoroom saves your design and exports it as a photo to your device's camera roll.

  9. [Optional] Use the export settings to share the design.

  10. Select Close design.


On Android

To replace the original background with a transparent background:​

  1. Select the Space you want to work in.

  2. Select Start from photo and choose a photo to import.

  3. Wait for Photoroom to remove the background of your image automatically.

    Do not select Skip background removal.

  4. Select the transparent template in the Classics collection.

    Photoroom opens your design in the editor.

  5. [Optional] If the background removal is not as precise as you need, use the Cutout feature to edit it.

On Web App

To replace the original background with a transparent background:

  1. Log in to the web app at app.photoroom.com.

  2. Select the Space you want to work in.

  3. Select Create in the sidebar.

  4. Click on Select photos and choose a photo to import.

    Photoroom imports your photo and automatically removes the background.

    By default, the Web App gives your design a transparent background. If you experiment with other backgrounds and want to return to the transparent background, select Templates and then use the arrow buttons to scroll through the template options in the Classics category. Choose the Transparent template.


  5. [Optional] If the foreground image is not exactly how you want it, use the Edit Cutout feature to edit it.

  6. [Optional] Select the foreground object in your image and move it to the position you want. When you select the object, its layer settings are shown.

  7. [Optional] Use the editor to make further changes, such as add text, shadows, graphics, and more.

  8. [Optional] Select Download. Enter a name for the download folder and choose the file type (or set it to AUTO to let Photoroom choose an appropriate type). Select Download to complete.

  9. Select Home to save your design and exit the editor. ​
