Photoroom makes it easy to change the background color of any design. You can set a background to a single color or you can change the coloring of a more complex background, such as a photo background or an AI background.

3 images. Each image is the same, except that the background is colored differently.

Photoroom has different settings for changing the background color:

  • Use Color when your design has a solid background color (or if you plan to switch to one).

  • Use Adjust when your design has a background image, like a photo or an AI-generated background. Adjust lets you keep the image but change its color.

This article has instructions for using both on the iOS version of Photoroom. For instructions for the Web App or Android versions, see:

Select a single color for the background

To choose a different color for the background:

  1. Select the Space you want to work in.

  2. Either:

    • Select one of your existing designs to open it in the editor.

    • Create a new design.

      1. Select Start from Photo on the Home screen and upload a photo. Let Photoroom remove the background automatically.

Do not select Skip background removal, otherwise you will only be able to change the color of the entire image.

      2. Select a template with a single color background, such as the White template in the Classics category.

  3. Select the background layer of your design.

  4. This step only applies if your design does not currently have a single color background.

    1. Select Change background.

    2. Select Color.

  5. Select a color from the color palette or your brand kit (if available). If you select the color wheel, you get a list of standard colors to choose from. There is also a color picker and you can enter the HTML code for a color too.

If you select a standard color, a slider appears. Use the slider to change the shade of the color.

  6. Select Done to confirm your choice.

  7. Optional] Use the editing features to make further changes to your design. For example, to add text or shapes.

  8. [Optional] Select Export. Use the export settings to save and/or share your design.

  9. Select Close design to save your design and exit the editor.

Change a background color with the Adjust settings

To use the Adjust settings to change the color of a background:

      2. Select a template.

  3. Select the background layer of your design.

  4. Select Adjust.

  5. Use the Adjust settings to change the appearance of the background:

    • Brightness
Use to change the overall light level (light or dark).

    • Warmth
Use to change the color temperature. Making an image warmer increases the amount of yellow and orange, while cooler makes it more blue.

    • Contrast
Use to make the background punchier or softer. High contrast makes brighter highlights and darker shadows, while low contrast gives a softer, more even tone.

    • Saturation
Use to set the intensity of the background colors. Higher saturation means stronger, more vibrant colors, while lower saturation gives muted colors.

    • Highlights
Changes the brightest parts of the background without affecting the darker areas. Increase the highlights to make bright areas pop. Decrease them to show more detail in bright areas.

    • Shadows
Changes the darkest parts of the background without affecting the lighter areas. Increase shadows to make dark areas lighter. Decrease the shadows to make the dark areas even darker.

    • Sharpen
Use to make details on the background more or less pronounced. Increase the sharpness for more defined edges. Decrease the sharpness for softer edges.

    • Hue
Use to change which colors appear on the background. It works by detecting the colors that exist on the background and then shifting them to different colors on the color wheel. For example, reds may become pinks, and greens may become blue or yellow.

  6. Select Done to close the background layer settings.

  7. [Optional] Use the editing features to make further changes to your design. For example, to add text or shapes.

  8. [Optional] Select Export. Use the export settings to save and/or share your design.

  9. Select Close design to save your design and exit the editor.
