For each product, you should provide:

  • Clear product title

  • Useful product description that gives customers the information they need

  • SEO image file names to help search engines identify the purpose of images

  • Alt text to help people who use screen readers and also search engines and AI bots to understand what each image shows.

These help to Improve accessibility and can help your product listings appear in search results.

In this article, we explain what the different types of product information are, why they are important, and give some tips on writing them. You can also use Photoroom to auto-generate the information for you.

Where to add product titles, descriptions, and metadata

Photoroom's Product Catalog has settings for adding a product title, description, SEO file name, and alt text. You can find them:

  • In the Shopify sidebar on the Web App

  • On the Product information screen on iOS and Android.

For step-by-step instructions, see the Edit Shopify product information articles in the Related Content section at the end.

Auto-generated metadata

The easiest way to create good metadata for your products is to let Photoroom create it for you.

In the Product Catalog, the title, description, SEO file name and Alt text settings all have a Generate option. Select it and Photoroom's AI will analyze the product image and generate the metadata for you. Or you can use Generate all metadata to create all of the entries at once.

Note: When you create a new product in Photoroom, it automatically generates a title and description for you.

Product information settings

The product information settings are:

  • Title

  • Description

  • SEO file name

  • Alt text

Title

The title is the main name of your product as shown to shoppers and search engines. It's one of the strongest signals for search ranking, so it needs to be clear and include important keywords.

Tips for writing product titles

  • Lead with the most important keywords, such as brand and product type

  • Be specific. Include details like size, colour, or material where relevant

  • Write for shoppers first, search engines and AI bots second

  • Avoid adding too many keywords or repeating keywords (keyword stuffing)

  • Check the title length is within the display limits for Shopify, Google, etc.

Good example:

ACME Wireless Charging Pad – 15W Fast Charge, Black

The good example leads with brand and product type, then adds useful specifics.

Bad example:

ACME Charger Charger Fast Charging Best Charger Wireless Pad Buy Now

The bad example repeats keywords, has no real details, and includes promotional filler that search engines and shoppers both ignore.

Description

The product description explains what the product is, what it does, and why a shopper should buy it. It supports the title with information that search engines and bots can index and shoppers can use to decide.

Tips for writing descriptions

  • Lead with the key benefit or use case, not just a feature list

  • Include specifics: materials, dimensions, compatibility, what's in the box

  • Write in plain, natural sentences

  • Avoid keyword stuffing

  • Break up longer descriptions with short paragraphs or bullet points

  • Answer likely questions before the shopper has to ask.

Good example:

Women's organic cotton crew neck t-shirt in navy. Relaxed fit with a soft, breathable finish, ideal for everyday wear. Machine washable, true to size

The good example leads with what the product actually is (fabric, style, colour, fit), gives practical details a shopper needs to decide (breathability, care, sizing), and reads like a normal sentence.

Bad example:

Best t-shirt ever. Nice shirt for women. Buy this shirt now, comfortable shirt, great shirt, women's shirt sale.

The bad example has no real product information, just vague praise ("best", "great", "nice"), repeats "shirt" for search engines rather than shoppers, and pushes a sales pitch ("buy this shirt now") instead of describing the product.

SEO file name

By making the file name of your image more descriptive, you can help search engines and AI bots understand its purpose. This can help with search rankings and is better than generic, meaningless file names.

Tips for writing SEO file names

  • Keep file names simple, clear, and based on how customers search.

  • Use descriptive words for the product

  • Separate words with hyphens (-)

  • Avoid generic names like “image” or random numbers.

Good example:

black-leather-shoulder-bag-purse

Bad examples:

product1234.jpg

Alt text

Alt text is a short description of an image. It is used by screen readers and search engines as they can't interpret images directly. Adding alt text to your images improves accessibility for visually impaired shoppers and helps your product images appear in search results.

Tips for writing alt text

Think of alt text as describing the image to someone who can’t see it. Focus on the most important information they need to understand what the image shows.

  • Describe what the product is, including key details like colour or material

  • Keep it short and focused

  • Use natural, search-friendly wording

  • Avoid phrases like “image of” or “picture of”

  • Include the purpose of the image (for example, product shot or lifestyle image)

  • Keep wording consistent across similar images.

Good example:

Black leather crossbody bag with gold chain strap

Bad example:

Image of a stylish black leather crossbody bag with a gold chain strap that looks elegant and is perfect for everyday use and special occasions

The bad example is too long, includes unnecessary phrases, and adds extra detail that isn’t needed.

SEO text in different languages

Photoroom generates SEO text in the same language as your Photoroom profile. To get SEO text in a different language, change your profile first, see Change the language of Photoroom.

Photoroom currently supports one language for product listings. If you want to have translations, you'll need to publish in one language from Photoroom and then add translations in Shopify.
