When editing Product Catalog images, you can open an image in the main editor. This gives you access to additional features that are not available in the Product Catalog Editor, such as:

  • Adding text layers

  • Adding graphic layers

  • Editing layers

The layers are only available for editing in certain circumstances, which are explained in the sections below.

When layers are available

When you open a Product Catalog image in the main editor, the image includes at least two base layers:

  • Background layer

  • Product layer

Any content you add in the main editor, such as text, graphics, or additional images, is created as a new, separate layer. You can edit these layers independently.

When layers become unavailable

Layers become unavailable when:

  • You exit the main editor and return to the Product Catalog Editor

  • You publish the Product Catalog image to Shopify

When this happens, Photoroom flattens the image back into:

  • A background layer

  • A product or object layer

At this point, any additional layers such as text or graphics are no longer editable separately.
