Photoroom uses layers to control how objects in your design are separated and arranged. This article introduces the basic concepts you need to understand before working with layers.
What are layers?
Every design in Photoroom is built using layers. Layers separate different parts of your image so you can:
Edit and position each part independently
Apply effects to one layer without affecting others
Move layers in front of, or behind, other layers.
A typical design includes:
Background layer — the back part of the image.
Object layers — layers for items in the foreground, such as products, people, or logos.
Layers are stacked. Layers higher in the stack appear in front of layers below them (see the "Stack order" section below).
Stack order (front-to-back order)
Layer order determines what you see in front or behind.
The background layer is always at the bottom.
Object layers appear above the background.
Moving a layer changes how it overlaps with other layers.
For example, in the image below, the shoe is at the top of the stack order, so it is shown in front of all the other layers. The background layer is at the bottom, so it is behind the other layers. The text layers are in front of the background, but behind the shoe.
To view the stack order on iOS and Android, open a design in the editor and then select Layers.
To learn how to view and change the stack order, see Change the order of layers.
Editing a layer
When you select a layer, its settings appear. Any changes you make will apply only to that layer.

Layers in AI-generated images
AI-generated images are created on a single object layer. You can still place other layers in front of or behind that layer after it is added to your design.
