AI-generated backgrounds are designed to suit the lighting and shadows in your photos. That's why it is usually better to have similar AI backgrounds for your photos rather than identical backgrounds.

For example, here we have 4 similar AI backgrounds, used on promotional photos for boxing gloves. They are not identical backgrounds, but they all look part of the same photoshoot.

4 different promotional images of boxing gloves. Each image has a slightly different AI background showing a boxing ring.

An easy way to create similar AI backgrounds is to use an image prompt. This is where you use an existing image as inspiration for the AI background (instructions below).

On iPhone and iPad

To create similar AI backgrounds on the iPhone or iPad version of Photoroom:

(Video shows Photoroom on iPhone)

  1. On the Create page, select Start from Photo. Upload a photo that you want to use with an AI background.

  2. Select AI Backgrounds.

  3. Select Create a background.

  4. Swipe the Suggested images left until you see a See All option. Select the See All option.

  5. Select Add your own.

  6. Choose a photo that has a background that is similar to what you want the AI to create. This could be a photo from your Camera roll or you can take a photo with your Camera or choose an image from your Files.

Alternatively, you can use one of the Suggested images or use Search to find images from the Unsplash website.

The AI will now use your chosen photo's background as inspiration for the AI background. It generates two images.

  7. [Optional] Select 100% inspiration at the bottom and use the slider to change the level of inspiration. The level of inspiration affects how closely the AI will try to match the background of the inspiration image. The lower the inspiration, the more creative the AI will be.

  8. [Optional] Select the dotted menu ( ... ) at the bottom. Note that this is only available when you are creating a new design. It is not available if you are editing an existing design.

    Use:

    1. Object size to change the size of your foreground objects

    2. Format to change the dimensions of the image canvas.

  9. [Optional] Select Generate 4 more to create more versions to choose from.

  10. [Optional] Enter a text prompt to describe what you want to see in the AI background.

  11. Select the image you want to use.

  12. [Optional] Use the editing features to make further changes to your design.

To learn about the editing features, see Introduction to editing in Photoroom.

  13. Select Export to save your design. You can share it too, if you wish.

  14. Select Done.

  15. Repeat this process for each image that you want to have a similar theme. Each time, choose the same photo as inspiration for the AI image prompt.

On Web App

To create similar AI backgrounds on the Web App (desktop) version of Photoroom:

  1. Log in to the web app at app.photoroom.com.

  2. Choose the workspace you want to work in.

  3. On the Create page, select Select a photo. Upload a photo that you want to use with an AI background.

  4. Select Backgrounds.

  5. Select AI Backgrounds.

  6. Select Create a background.

  7. On the Image tab, select the Select an image link. Find and select the image file that you want to use as inspiration for the AI background.

The AI generates 4 backgrounds inspired by your chosen image.

  8. [Optional] Select Generate 4 more to create more AI backgrounds to choose from.

  9. [Optional] Select the Inspired from image option to make changes to the prompt.

  10. Select the image that you want to use.

  11. [Optional] Use the editing features to make changes to your design.

To learn about the editing features, see Introduction to editing in Photoroom.

  12. [Optional] Select the download icon to download your design. Enter a name for the file, choose the format and then select Download.

  13. Select Home to exit the editor and save your design.

  14. Repeat this process for each image that you want to have a similar theme. Each time, choose the same photo as inspiration for the AI image prompt.
