Use the same AI background on multiple designs

Learn how to create AI backgrounds that look like part of the same theme.

If you want the same AI background on multiple images, we recommend that you use similar backgrounds rather than identical backgrounds. This is because each AI background is created to suit the lighting, angles, shadows, and colors in the original photo.

But if you really insist on having the exact same AI background on multiple designs, there is a workaround, which we will explain here.

Note: The workaround involves making a regular image from your AI background design. When you have finished, you will be able to apply the background image to as many designs as you like, but it will be a static image not an AI background. It won't redraw when you change the foreground layers.


On iPhone and iPad

To use the same AI-generated background image on multiple designs:

Note: You need to have a design with an AI background before you follow the instructions below. To learn how to create a design with an AI background, see Add a suggested AI background to your design and Create your own AI backgrounds.

  1. Select Content.

  2. Select the workspace that contains the design with the AI background you want to use.

  3. Select the design to open it in the editor.

  4. Select Export to save your design as an image file to your device.

  5. Select X to exit the editor.

  6. Select New design and import a new photo. You will replace the background in this new photo with the AI Background image.

    Important: Do not select Skip background removal.

  7. When the import is finished, select the Transparent template.

  8. Select Backgrounds.

  9. Select Image.

  10. Select Add Background.

  11. Select Image.

  12. Select the AI Background image that you exported in step 3.

  13. Select Retouch in the background layer's settings.

  14. Use Erase and draw over the foreground object that is shown as part of the background. You will likely need to draw over it several times to get the AI to completely remove it.

  15. Select Done.

  16. Select Done to close the background layer settings.

  17. [Optional] Use the editing features to further enhance or resize your design.

  18. [Optional] Export your design.

  19. Select X to save your design and exit the editor.

On Android

To use the same AI-generated background image on multiple designs:

  1. Select Content.

  2. Select the workspace that contains the design with the AI background you want to use.

  3. Select the design to open it in the editor.

  4. Select Export to save your design as an image file to your device.

  5. Select X to exit the editor.

  6. Select New design and import a new photo. You will replace the background in this new photo with the AI Background image.

    Important: Do not select Skip background removal.

  7. When the import is finished, select the Transparent template.

  8. Select Backgrounds.

  9. Select Image.

  10. Select Add Background.

  11. Select Image.

  12. Select the AI Background image that you exported in step 3.

  13. Select Retouch in the background layer's settings.

  14. Use Erase and draw over the foreground object that is shown as part of the background. You will likely need to draw over it several times to get the AI to completely remove it.

  15. Select Done.

  16. Select Done to close the background layer settings.

  17. [Optional] Use the editing features to further enhance or resize your design.

  18. [Optional] Export your design.

  19. Select the back arrow to save your design and exit the editor.

On Web App

To use the same AI-generated background image on multiple designs:

  1. Log in to Photoroom at app.photoroom.com.

  2. Select the workspace that contains the design with the AI background.

  3. Select the design with the AI background.

  4. Select Resize and look at the dimensions shown below the design. Make a note of the size.

  5. Select Download, enter a file name, and then select Download. Photoroom downloads your design as an image file.

  6. Select Home to exit the editor.

  7. Select Create.

  8. Use Select a photo to upload a photo. Photoroom removes its background and gives it a white background instead. It opens the image on a new design.

  9. Use Resize to set the new design to the same size as the design with the AI background.

  10. Select Backgrounds.

  11. Select Image.

  12. Upload the image file you downloaded in step 5.

  13. Select the foreground layer and use the handles to resize it to suit the background. Use drag-and-drop to reposition the foreground layer if needed.

  14. Select the background layer.

  15. Select Retouch.

  16. Use the slider to change the size of the cursor and then draw over the foreground object that is shown as part of the background. You may need to draw over it several times to get the AI to completely remove it.

  17. Select Confirm.

  18. [Optional] Use the editing features to further enhance or resize your design.

  19. [Optional] Select Download to download your design as an image file.

  20. Select Home to save your design and exit the editor.

Note: On the Web App version of Photoroom, you can use AI Backgrounds and Batch Mode together. This lets you set AI Backgrounds for a collection of images, all at once. For details, see Batch edit with AI Backgrounds and AI Shadows.
