Photoroom's AI Backgrounds lets you use AI to create any background you want. Describe any scene or choose from a list of themes and Photoroom will create it for you.

There are several ways to create a background with the AI Backgrounds tool:

Choose a suggested background from our library of background themes
Upload an image to use as a starting point for an AI Background. This is called Image Guidance.
Use a prompt to describe the background you want.

Note: You can also use a prompt to add objects to the background or remove unwanted parts of an image.

Ways to access AI Backgrounds

AI Backgrounds is available in many places in Photoroom.

As a standalone tool from the AI tools menu
In the main editor, from the Backgrounds settings
As part of the workflow when creating a new design
From the AI tools menu in a Batch of images
From the AI tools menu in the product catalog editor.

Settings for AI Backgrounds

AI Backgrounds has some settings that are common across all versions of Photoroom and some that are platform-specific. We describe them all in the sections below.

Source image (Choose an image)

Photoroom needs a source image to use as a starting point. It will remove the background from the source image so that it's ready for a new AI background.

If you're using the standalone AI Backgrounds tool, you will be prompted to choose a source image at the start.

AI Model

Photoroom lets you choose from a range of different AI models for generating your AI Backgrounds. The early AI models (v2, v3) produce lower resolution images but consume fewer AI credits than the more sophisticated Studio models. The Studio models produce higher resolution outputs.

Subject

Subject is only available on iOS and Android. Use it to:

Access the Edit Cutout tool, which you can use to erase or restore parts of the original image. To learn more about Edit Cutout, see What is Edit Cutout?
Change the source image.
Make the source image larger or smaller on the canvas. Use the slider to change the size.

Background

Use the Background option to choose the type of AI background for your image:

Choose an AI-generated background from the list of Suggested backgrounds or background themes, such as Mood, Countertop, and Texture.
Select + Custom to upload or choose an image of your own.
Search for a background image. The search looks in our library and the images available on Unsplash.

Photoroom generates a background that is influenced by your image choice. It may not be an exact match as Photoroom tries to make the generated background look authentic in relation to the rest of your image.

Search

Use the search to look for images by name or category. Enter a search term and Photoroom will search for matching images. It searches in:

Photoroom's library of backgrounds
Unsplash for images shared publicly by Unsplash users.

When you see a background you like, select it. Photoroom will use that image as inspiration.

Prompt

Use the prompt to describe the background you want Photoroom to generate.

Note: On the mobile versions of Photoroom, AI Background can combine your text prompt and your choice of background theme. To learn how Photoroom uses the prompt, see How the AI Background prompt works.

Create a background

This option is only available on the Web App. It lets you create a custom background by using one of three tabs: Image, Assisted, Manual.

Image (tab)

On the Web App, use the Image tab to do one of the following:

Upload an image to use as inspiration.
Search for an inspiration image from Unsplash.

Photoroom will aim to create a background with a similar look-and-feel as the image you have chosen.

Assisted (tab)

On the Web App, use the Assisted tab to create a text prompt to describe the background you want. This is an assisted prompt, with a set structure that provides the essential information Photoroom needs:

Your subject on [a surface] with [details] in the background

Complete the prompt by typing in your own words or selecting from the suggested words.

Note: On the Web App, prompts and selections are not combined. If you enter a text prompt to generate a background and then choose a background theme, your text prompt is ignored, see How the AI Background prompt works.

Manual (tab)

On the Web App, use the Manual tab to enter a free-form text description of the background you want. This works in the same way as the Prompt field on mobile.

Batch consistency

This option is only available in the Batch editor and the Shopify Products editor. It lets you control how much Photoroom alters the background for each image.

On
Photoroom's AI will apply the background more uniformly, making much fewer changes for shadows and lighting.
Off
Photoroom will tailor the background to better suit the lighting and shadows of the product. There may be more variation with the backgrounds.

After generating an image

When you have generated an image with a background that you like, you can:

Save the image
Download the image
Open the image in the main editor to make further changes
Use the Batch editor to make further changes (Batch only)
Use the product catalog editor to make further changes (Product catalog only).
