On the Web App version of Photoroom, AI Backgrounds lets you describe the background you want by using a prompt. There are two types of prompt you can use:

  • Assisted

  • Manual

In this article, we'll explain how to use both types of prompt. We assume that you already know how to access the prompt settings in the side panel. If you don't, you can find out in Create a design with an AI Background (Web App).

Assisted prompts

Assisted prompts use a fixed structure that the AI can use to generate an image. The structure is:

Your subject on <a surface> with <details> in the background.

Graphic showing the Your subject on a surface with details in the background structure. It shows the fields and the suggested descriptions.

To use an assisted prompt, select the Assisted tab on the Custom Backgrounds side panel.

Then you can either:

  • Select one of the suggested surface or details descriptions

  • Enter a text description of the surface or details in the fields. As you type, Photoroom will make new suggestions based on what you have typed. You can select one of the new suggestions if you prefer.

Select Generate images to create 2 images.

Example:

Your subject on a stone slab with a garden scene in the background.

Manual prompts

Manual prompts are free-form text descriptions that tell the AI what to create. There is no fixed structure — you can enter anything you like!

To use a manual prompt, select the Manual tab on the Custom Backgrounds side panel. Enter a description of the background you want and then select Generate images.

Example:

A breathtaking mountain view in the background.
