AI credits

Learn about your AI credits allowance and how AI credits are consumed when using AI features.

AI credits are the currency Photoroom uses for most of its AI features, like generating images and creating videos. Your subscription includes a set amount of AI credits which you and your team can spend on image and video generation, however you like.

In this article, we’ll explain how AI credits work and what is included with each plan. We also answer some common questions.

How AI credits work

Each Space is given a shared allowance (also called a pool) of AI credits. Whenever you or someone in your Space uses an AI feature, the cost in credits is automatically deducted from the pool.

For example:

Let's say you use Virtual Model to generate an image. In the same Space, another member uses Ghost Mannequin to generate an image.

There is one shared pool of AI credits for the Space. The cost of the Virtual Model generation and the Ghost Mannequin generation is automatically deducted from the pool.

How many AI credits does each plan get?

AI credit allowances can change over time as the cost of generative AI tools evolves. Because of this, we don't publish exact figures for each plan. We take a flexible approach so that allowances can be updated to reflect changes in AI costs.

This table gives you an idea of which plan is right for you.

Plan

Best for

AI credit allowance

Free

Side-hustlers and first-time sellers

Small allowance to try core AI tools

Pro

Solopreneurs creating regularly

5× Free

Max

Small brands looking to scale

3× Pro

Ultra

Growing businesses managing larger catalogs with automation

1.7× Max

Enterprise

Large operations with custom requirements

Custom limits

Note: Previously, Max and Ultra plans had separate AI credit pools for images and videos. We have now replaced this with a single pool of AI credits to make it simpler. Find out more in Unified AI credits on Max and Ultra.

What counts as an AI generation?

Each time you use an AI feature to generate (or update) an image or video, it counts as one AI generation and uses AI credits. The number of AI credits used varies depending on which AI feature you used. This applies to all AI features.

For example, if you use Virtual Model to generate an image, that counts as one AI generation and uses credits. If you then use Edit with AI to make changes to the Virtual Model image, that counts as another AI generation and uses credits.

Exceptions:
These do not use AI credits:

  • Applying white backgrounds

  • Applying a template

  • Background removal

AI generations in Batch and Product Catalog

When using AI tools in Batch and Product Catalog, it counts as 1 generation for each image generated/updated. For example, if you use Recolor on 4 Batch images, it counts as 4 generations.

Do all AI features use the same amount of credits?

No.

  • Video generation uses more AI credits than images

  • Complex transformation features, such as Virtual Model, Ghost Mannequin, and Edit with AI, use more credits than simpler AI features, such as AI Shadows.

  • Higher resolution outputs use more AI credits than lower resolution outputs for the same feature.

What if an AI generation fails?

If a generation fails due to a technical error, the credits used for that generation are refunded automatically. No action is needed on your part.

What if you run out of AI credits?

If you run out of AI credits before your renewal date, you have two options. You can upgrade to a higher tier subscription with a larger allowance, or you can wait until your credits renew automatically on your next renewal date.

See the "Upgrade" articles listed in Related content below.

Note: Photoroom will notify you when certain usage thresholds are met, so you can take action before you run out of credits. You can also track your usage in-app. (see the tracking articles listed in the Related content section below)

How to track AI credits?

Use Photoroom's Usage feature to track AI credit usage in your Space. See:

When do AI credits renew?

AI credits renew automatically at regular intervals:

Subscription

Renewal date

Weekly

Every week on the same day you subscribed.

Monthly

Every month on the same date that you subscribed.

For example, if you subscribed on the 15th, the renewal will take place on the 15th each month.

Yearly

Monthly

For example, if you subscribed on the 15th, the renewal will take place on the 15th each month.

Note: On the day of renewal, the AI credits are updated at approximately the same time of day that you subscribed. For example, if you subscribed at 02:11 UTC, your AI credits will be renewed at 02:11 UTC.
