You can use an existing image as the basis for an AI Background. For example, in the image below, we uploaded a sports shoe product photo and then used an image of snowy mountains as the inspiration for the AI background.
Inspiration photo (left) and product photo (right) with AI background based loosely on the inspiration photo.
Using an image as inspiration is also known as creating an "image prompt". The AI analyzes the image and then creates a background in a similar style for your product photo.
On iPhone and iPad
To use an image as inspiration for an AI background:
(Video shows Photoroom on iPhone)
Select Content.
Select the workspace you want to work in.
Select New design and upload a photo for your design.
Alternatively, you can select one of your existing designs and use that instead.
Select AI Backgrounds.
Note: If you are editing an existing design, select Backgrounds and then AI Backgrounds.
Make sure the AI model is set to v3 or v2 (at the top of the screen).
The Studio and Studio HD AI models do not support image prompts.
Either:
Select one of the suggested backgrounds (Suggested, Trending, etc.)
Use Search for backgrounds to find an image on Unsplash.
If you choose a suggested background, the AI has the prompt for that background in place, but does not yet have an inspiration image.
If you search for a background, the AI has an inspiration image and creates a prompt from that image automatically.
Select Customize this background.
Select Inspiration.
[This step only applies if you chose a suggested background]. Provide an inspiration image. Either:
Search for an image
Select a suggested image
Select Add your own and upload an image file.
Select 100% inspiration.
Use the slider to change the inspiration amount. The amount of inspiration controls how closely the AI background will match the source image (0 - loosely inspired to 100 - very inspired).
You can also select Change to swap the image.
[Optional] Edit the prompt to make changes to the image.
Note: You can use an image prompt and a text prompt at the same time. The AI will be influenced by both prompts. For example, you could have an inspiration photo of a snowy mountain range with blue sky and then use a text prompt to change the sky to red.
When you see an AI background that you like, select it to apply it to your design. The design opens in the editor.
[Optional] Use the editor settings to further customize your design, for example, add text, shapes, or logos.
[Optional] Select Export to save your design as an image file on your device. You can also use the export options to share your design.
Select X to save your design and exit the editor.

On Web App
AI Backgrounds on the Web App work slightly differently to those on the mobile versions. On the Web App:
The AI uses an inspiration image or a text prompt. It will not use both at the same time.
The inspiration level is fixed at 100%.
