Use an existing image as inspiration for an AI background

You can use image prompts to get the AI to create backgrounds that are inspired by an existing photo

You can use an existing image as the basis for an AI Background. The idea is that your photo inspires the AI to create a background that is similar. For example, if you use a photo of snowy mountains, Photoroom will create an AI Background that features mountains.

Note: Using an image as inspiration is also known as creating an "image prompt".

Web App only

Requires AI Credits.


On Web App

On the Web App, AI Backgrounds can use an inspiration image or a text prompt. They cannot use a combination of image and text prompts at the same time.

  1. Select the Space you want to work in.

  2. Select Create.

  3. Click Select photos and upload an image file. Photoroom imports your image and opens it as a new design in the editor.

    Alternatively, select Designs and then select one of your existing designs to open it in the editor.

  4. Select Backgrounds.

  5. Select AI Backgrounds.

  6. Select a suggested background to use as a starting point.

  7. Select the AI model button (it shows Studio by default) and select v3 or earlier.

  8. Select the pencil icon for the suggested background prompt.

  9. Select the Image tab.

  10. Either:

    • Upload an image file to use as inspiration.

    • Search for an inspiration image from Unsplash.

    • Choose one of the suggested images.


    When you have an image you like, select it. Photoroom will generate 2 images that have a background that is inspired by your chosen image.

  11. [Optional] Select Generate 2 more to create more variations.

  12. When you see a background that you like, select it to apply it to your design.

  13. [Optional] Use the editor settings to make further changes, such as add text or add graphics.

  14. [Optional] Select Download to download your design as an image file in the browser. Enter a file name, choose the file type and select Download.

  15. Select Home to save your design and exit the editor.
