When you import a photo, Photoroom automatically detects the objects in your photo and removes the background. Sometimes, it may keep parts of the image that you don't want, so we have a Cutout feature to help you remove them.

3 side-by-side images. The first shows a photo in Photoroom's editor and Assisted Cutout is active. The second image shows an object in the photo being selected. The third image shows the selected object from image 2 has been removed.

In this article, we explain how to use Assisted Cutout on an image that you import into Photoroom. With Assisted Cutout, you tap or click on an object in the photo and Photoroom tries to detect and remove the rest of the object automatically.

Note: Assisted Cutout can often remove an area with precision, but in some cases, it may remove too little or too much. You can undo the Assisted Cutout and do a Manual Cutout instead if it is not accurate enough. You can also use Restore to recover erased parts of a design.

Note: To learn about using Cutout with existing designs, see Add and remove parts of an image with Edit Cutout.

On iPhone and iPad

To use Assisted Cutout to remove part of the imported image:

  1. On the Create page, select Start from Photo.

  2. Upload a new image. You can select either:

    1. Camera roll to choose an image from your device's photo gallery.

    2. Camera to take a new photo with your device and then upload that to Photoroom.

    3. Files to choose an image file.

    4. Generate an image with AI to create an AI image. We will not cover this here, for details, see Create an AI Image. When you have created an AI Image, the Cutout feature works in the same way as described for importing photos.

  3. Select Cutout. The option is next to the preview image.

  4. Select the Erase option.

  5. Select the Assisted tab.

  6. Touch the part of the image you want to remove.
Photoroom tries to detect the edges of the object you touched and removes it from the image.

If Photoroom has removed too little, touch the object again to remove more.

If Photoroom has removed too much, select the Undo icon at the top to cancel the change. Alternatively, select the Restore option and use it to recover the erased parts of the image. Restore works in a similar way to Erase, except that it brings back removed areas.

You may prefer to use Manual Cutout to remove the area more precisely.

  7. Select Done.

  8. Select a template for the background of your image or select AI Backgrounds to create a background from a prompt.

  9. [Optional] Use the editor settings to make further changes to your design, such as add shapes or text.

  10. [Optional] Select Export and use the export settings to export your design as an image file and share it. Select Done to exit the export options.

  11. Select the cross icon ( x ) to exit the editor and save your design.
