With custom templates, you can create a design and then transform it into a template. You can then make new designs that are based on the template. This can be a much quicker way to create a range of similar designs as:

  • You do the bulk of the design work in the template

  • The designs you create from the template automatically have the same layers as the template

  • In the designs, you only need to make the changes you want.

For example, you might want to create your own template for a new range of products (see image 1 below). You will use the same template to create a promotional image for each different product (see image 2 and image 3).

3 side-by-side images of a design. Image 1 is a template and it has an orange theme with a sports shoe as the product image. The sports shoe is replaceable. Image 2 is a design based on the template. It looks the same as the template except it has a shoe photo, a blue theme, and different text. Image 3 is another design based on the template. It has a pink theme, a shoe photo, and different text.

In this article, we explain how to create a custom template. If you are unfamiliar with templates, see templates for an overview.

On iPhone and iPad

To create a custom template on an iPhone or iPad:

(Video shows Photoroom on iPhone)

  1. Select Content.

  2. Choose the workspace you want to work in.

Important! Custom templates are only available in the workspace where they are created.

  3. Select the design you want to use as your template.

Alternatively, you could add a new photo and create a new design or you could use AI to create a new design.

  4. Edit your design so that it is suitable to use as a finished design. While editing, be aware that you are creating a common design for use with different photos.

When you create designs based on your template, you will be able to make changes in the designs. But the more you can do right now in your template design, the less you will need to do later.

For more information, see the various editing articles.

  5. Select X to save the design and exit the editor.

  6. Find your new design in the Designs section of your Content and select its dotted menu ( ... ).

  7. Select Turn into Template.
Photoroom turns your design into a template.

  8. Select Templates (in the Folders section of the Content page).

  9. Select your custom template to display a menu.

  10. Select Edit the original template.

  11. Select a layer that you want to be replaced when you apply the template.

When you apply a template, you can choose to upload a photo. Photoroom will remove the background from the photo and use the main subject in place of the replaceable layer(s) in the template.

  12. Turn the Replaceable Subject option on.

  13. Repeat steps 11 and 12 for each layer that you want to be replaced by an imported photo.

  14. Select X to save the template and exit the editor.

You have now created a custom template that can be used by users with access to the workspace.

To apply the template, navigate to Templates, select the template and then select Apply to images and upload one or more photos. For more details, see Apply a template to an image and Apply a template to multiple images in Batch Mode.
