Use your own image file as a background on a template

Learn how to add a background image to a template so that you can apply the same background to many designs.

You can use your own image file as the background in a template. Once you have set up the template, you can apply it to:

  • Many designs

  • Multiple images at once in Batch Mode.

It's a convenient and time-saving way of adding the same background image to a lot of designs.

On iPhone and iPad

To use your own image file as a background on a template:

  1. Select the Space that you want to work in.

  2. Create a design that uses your own image as a background. For instructions, see Use your own image as a background.

  3. Select Content.

  4. Select the context menu ( ... ) for the design you created in step 2.

  5. Select Turn into template.

  6. Select your Templates folder.

  7. Select the context menu ( ... ) for the template you created.

  8. Select Edit the original template.

  9. Select the foreground layer (the object that will be replaced when you use the template on other images).

  10. Turn Replaceable subject on.
    This is important. If Replaceable subject is off, the foreground layer will be included as well as the background layer when you use the template.

  11. Select X to close the template.

You now have a template that uses your image file as a background. You can apply the template to individual designs or to a batch of images.


On Android

To use your own image file as a background on a template:

  1. Select the Space that you want to work in.

  2. Create a design that uses your own image as a background. For instructions, see Use your own image as a background.

  3. Select Content.

  4. Select the context menu ( ... ) for the design you created in step 2.

  5. Select Turn into template.

  6. Select your Templates folder.

  7. Select the context menu ( ... ) for the template you created.

  8. Select Edit the original template.

  9. Select the foreground layer (the object that will be replaced when you use the template on other images).

  10. Turn Replaceable subject on.
    This is important. If Replaceable subject is off, the foreground layer will be included as well as the background layer when you use the template.

  11. Select Done to close the layer.

  12. Select the back arrow to exit the template editor.

You now have a template that uses your image file as a background. You can apply the template to individual designs or to a batch of images.


On Web App

To use your own image file as a background on a template:

  1. Select the Space that you want to work in.

  2. Create a design that uses your own image as a background. For instructions, see Use your own image as a background.

  3. Select the context menu ( ... ) for the design you created in step 3.

  4. Select Turn into template.

  5. Enter a name for your template and select Create template.

    Photoroom creates a template from your design. This can take several seconds. When it is complete, Photoroom shows the Templates page.

  6. Position the cursor over your template to reveal its context menu and select Edit template.

  7. Select the foreground layer (the object that will be replaced when you use the template on other images).

  8. Turn Replaceable subject on.
    This is important. If Replaceable subject is off, the foreground layer will be included as well as the background layer when you use the template.

  9. Select Home to save your template and exit the template editor.

    Home icon has a house symbol.

You now have a template that uses your image file as a background. You can apply the template to individual designs or to a batch of images.
