With AI Backgrounds, you can swap out a design’s background for an AI-generated scene. Simply describe the kind of setting you’re after, and Photoroom will produce it for you. This makes it easy to experiment with different styles and give your images a new look.

Two images. Image 1 shows a bag on a plain blue background. Image 2 shows the same bag as if it is in a store window, with the store interior in the background.

In this article, we explain how to replace a regular background with an AI Background when using the Web App version of Photoroom. If you're using the iOS or Android version, see:

On Web App

To replace the background of a design with an AI Background:

  1. Select the Space you want to work in.

  2. Select Designs.

  3. Select the design you want to edit.

  4. Select the background layer.

  5. Select Change.

Note: If you don't see Change, it's because the design already has an AI Background. You can select Customize instead and then edit the prompt or choose a Background theme from the list.

  6. Select AI Backgrounds.

  7. Either:

    • Select one of the generated images to use.

    • Select Create a background and enter a description of the background you want. You can use an Assisted prompt or a Manual prompt (see How Assisted and Manual prompts work).

    • Use Search for backgrounds to search for different types of AI background or recently used prompts.

    • Select a background theme from the list.

  8. [Optional] Use the editing features to change the image as required. For example, to add text or shapes or to change the color.

  9. Select Download to download your design as an image file. Enter a file name and select the image file type and then select Download to confirm.

  10. Select Home to save your design and exit the editor.
