You can add realistic shadow effects to your designs with the AI Shadows feature. It's a quick and easy way to make the objects in your designs look more three-dimensional.

Before image shows a plate viewed from above on a white background with no shadow. After shows the plate with a shadow to one side, making it look more three-dimensional.

Steps (Web App)

To use the AI Shadows tool to apply shadow effects:

Stage 1: Open a design

  1. Select the Space you want to work in.

  2. Open a design in the editor. You can:

    • Select AI tools, then select AI Shadows, and upload an image to work with.

    • Create a new design, open it in the the main editor and select AI Shadows.

    • Open an existing design in the main editor and select AI Shadows.

You can then use a Preset shadow effect or an Advanced shadow effect (see Stage 2 and Stage 3).

Stage 2: Use Preset AI Shadows [Optional]

For quick results, you can choose a preconfigured AI Shadow effect:

  1. Select the Presets tab.

  2. Choose from:

    • None
      No shadow

    • Soft
      A light shadow effect

    • Hard
      A strong shadow effect

    • Floating
A shadow below the main object to make it look like it is hovering.

Stage 3: Use Advanced AI Shadows [Optional]

Use Advanced AI Shadows if you want more control over the shadow effect or for fine-tuning.

Note: The instructions below assume you want to use all of the advanced settings. If you don't want to use a setting, turn its switch to off. Photoroom will use the default for that setting instead.

  1. Select the Advanced tab.

  2. Set the Shadow hardness.

    1. Set the Shadow hardness switch to on.

    2. Use the slider to set the hardness level. Soft for more dissipated and foggy shadows, Hard for more dense shadows.

  3. Set the Shadow intensity.

    1. Set the Shadow intensity switch to on.

    2. Use the slider to set the intensity level. Light for lighter, more gray shadows, Dark for stronger, more black shadows.

  4. Set the Shadow direction.

    1. Set the Shadow direction switch to on.

    2. Use the slider to set the direction (Back, Left, Front, Right, Back). The slider is designed to represent 360° around the object.

  5. Set the Shadow spread.

    1. Set the Shadow direction switch to on.

    2. Use the slider to set the length of the shadow from Short to Long.

  6. Set the Product orientation.

    1. Set the Product orientation switch to on.

    2. Use the slider to set the position of the product. This affects where the shadow appears in relation to the product.

Flat represents a product that is shown laying flat on a surface.

A plate with food on. The shadow is around the right side of the plate, making it look like it is laid flat on a table.

Upright represents the product stood upright on its bottom edge.

a plate with food on. The shadow is applied at the bottom so it looks like the plate is stood on one end and the food is defying gravity.

Important: Photoroom only applies an orientation when the shadow seems plausible based on the image (object, lighting, etc.). If the selected orientation does not seem plausible, it won’t be applied.

  7. Select Apply changes to regenerate your image with your chosen AI Shadow effects in place.

Stage 4: Finish editing and download

When you are happy with the AI Shadow effect you've chosen:

  1. [Optional] Use the editor to make further changes, such as add text or graphics.

  2. [Optional] Select Download. Enter a name for the download file and then choose the image file format. Select Download to save the design as an image file on your device.

  3. Select Home to exit the editor and save your design in Photoroom.
