To turn a black and white image into a color image, use the Edit with AI feature. It lets you upload an image and then describe the changes you want in an AI prompt.

For the prompt, we recommend that you:

  • Mention "colorize"

  • Describe the colors you want for each part of the image

  • Be specific about which parts you want to be color and which parts you want to leave black and white (if any).

For example, with the following image, we used this prompt to add color to the image:

"Colorize. Lilac coat. White t-shirt. Blue jeans. Yellow shoes. Orange chair."

2 images. Image 1 is black and white shows a woman wearing a coat, sitting in a chair. Image 2 is the same image, but the woman, her clothes, and the chair are in color.

To learn how to use Edit with AI, see:

Example: Adding color to a black and white image (iOS)

Here is an example that shows color being added to a black and white image on the iPhone version of Photoroom:

To add color to the image:

  1. Select the Space you want to work in.

  2. Select AI Tools.

  3. Select Edit with AI.

  4. Upload your black and white photo.

  5. Use the prompt to describe the color changes you want, for example:

"Colorize. Lilac coat. White t-shirt. Blue jeans. Yellow shoes. Orange chair."

  6. Select the size for the image.

  7. Select the arrow button to generate.

  8. Select the image you want and then Save it or select Open in editor to make further changes.

You can use a similar approach on the Android and Web App versions of Photoroom.
