Add an AI Background

Learn how to add an AI-generated background to a design

On the Pro and Business plans, you can add an AI Background to a design. This is a great way to get a themed background that is designed especially for your image.

When you create or edit a design, you can either:

Note: AI Backgrounds is the new name for Instant Backgrounds.


On iPhone and iPad

To add an AI Background on the iPhone or iPad version of Photoroom:

  1. On the Create page, select Start from photo.

    Alternatively, select AI Backgrounds in the Tools section. Choose a photo to import and then continue from step 4.

  2. Choose a photo to import.

  3. Select AI Backgrounds.

  4. Either:

    1. Search for a background by entering a description in the search field at the top.

    2. Choose an AI Background from the various Suggested categories.

    3. Select the edit icon in the top corner and enter a custom prompt. To learn about custom prompts, see Create your own AI Backgrounds with custom prompts.

  5. When you select a background, Photoroom generates 4 images. You can either select one of those or select Generate 4 more to create some more.

  6. [Optional] Select Change size and set the size and orientation for your image. Select Done to confirm.

  7. Select the AI Background that you want to use.

  8. [Optional] Use the editing options, such as Insert, Text, and Shadows to make further changes.

  9. Select Export. Use the export options to save and share your design. You can find the design in Your Designs.

  10. Select Done.


On Android

To add an AI Background on the Android version of Photoroom:

  1. On the Create page, select Start from photo.

    Alternatively, select AI Backgrounds in the Tools section. Choose a photo to import and then continue from step 4.

  2. Choose a photo to import.

  3. Select AI Backgrounds.

  4. Either:

    1. Search for a background by entering a description in the search field at the top.

    2. Choose an AI Background from the various Suggested categories.

    3. Select the edit icon in the top corner and enter a custom prompt. To learn about custom prompts, see Create your own AI Backgrounds with custom prompts.

  5. When you select a background, Photoroom generates 4 images. You can either select one of those or select Generate 4 more to create some more.

  6. [Optional] Select Resize and set the size and orientation for your image. Select Done to confirm.

  7. Select the AI Background that you want to use.

  10. Select Done.


On Web App

To add an AI background on the Web App:

  1. Log in to the web app at app.photoroom.com

  2. In the top-left corner, make sure you are in the appropriate workspace. For example, your personal space or a team workspace.

  3. Select Select a photo.

    Alternatively, select AI Backgrounds in the Tools section.

  4. Choose a photo to import.

  5. [Optional] Select Resize and choose the canvas size for your image.

  6. [Optional] Use the handles to resize and reposition the foreground objects.

  7. Select AI Backgrounds.

  8. Here, you can either:

    1. Search for a background by entering a description in the search field at the top.

    2. Choose an AI Background from the various Suggested categories.

    3. Select Create a background and use a custom prompt to make a background. To learn about custom prompts, see Create your own AI Backgrounds with custom prompts.

  9. Photoroom generates 4 images. You can either use one of those or select Generate 4 more to create some more.

  10. Select the AI Background that you want to use.

  11. [Optional] Use the editing features to make further changes.

  12. Select Download to download a local version in the browser. Enter the filename and choose the file type for the download. Photoroom also saves it to Your Designs.
