Add an Instant Background

Learn how to add an AI-generated Instant Background to a design

On the Pro and Business plans, you can add an Instant Background to a design. Instant Backgrounds are generated by AI and are created especially to suit the foreground objects and text in your design.

When you create or edit a design, you can either:

On iPhone, iPad, and Android

The process for adding an Instant Background is similar on iPhone, iPad, and Android devices:

  1. Select Select a photo.

    Alternatively, select Instant Backgrounds in the Tools section.

  2. Choose a photo to import.

  3. [Optional] Select Resize and set the size and orientation for your image.

  4. Select Instant Backgrounds.

  5. Either:

    1. Search for a background by entering a description in the search field at the top.

    2. Choose an Instant Background from the various categories.

    3. Select the edit icon in the top corner and enter a custom prompt. To learn about custom prompts, see Create your own Instant Backgrounds with custom prompts.

  6. When you select a background, PhotoRoom generates 4 images. You can either select one of those or select Generate 4 more to create some more.

  7. Select the Instant Background that you want to use.

  8. Select the share icon. From here, you can save or share your design. PhotoRoom also saves it to Your Designs.

  9. Select Done.


On Web App

To add an instant background on the Web App:

  1. Select Start from photo.

    Alternatively, select Instant Backgrounds in the Tools section.

  2. Choose a photo to import.

  3. Select Instant Backgrounds.

  4. Here, you can either:

    1. Search for a background by entering a description in the search field at the top.

    2. Choose an Instant Background from the various categories.

    3. Select the edit icon in the top corner and enter a custom prompt. To learn about custom prompts, see Create your own Instant Backgrounds with custom prompts.

  5. PhotoRoom generates 4 images. You can either use one of those or select Generate 4 more to create some more.

  6. [Optional] Select Change size and set the size and orientation for your design.

  7. Select the Instant Background that you want to use.

  8. Select the share icon. From here, you can save or share your design. PhotoRoom also saves it to Your Designs.

  9. Select Done.
