Keep the original background of your photo

Learn how to keep the original background of your photo, instead of a PhotoRoom background

Photoroom does a great job of automatically removing the background from your photos when you add them to a design. But in some cases, you may want to keep the original background or part of the background for your design.

To keep the background, you can:

  • Use the original background template

  • Use the retouch tool to restore parts of the background.

On iPhone and iPad

Keep original background from photo

Use the Original image template to keep the entire background of a photo in your design:

  1. On the Create page, select Start from Photo and choose a photo to import.
    Photoroom imports the photo and removes the background automatically.

  2. In the Classics collection of templates, select Original image.
    Photoroom adds a background layer to your design. It uses the original background from your photo on the background layer.

  3. Use the editing features to change the image as required. For example, to add text or shapes or to change the color.

  4. Select Export.

  5. Use the export options to save and share your design.

  6. Select Done.

Keep part of the background from a photo

Use the Retouch tool to keep part of a photo's original background in your design.

  1. On the Create page, select Start from Photo and choose a photo to import.
    Photoroom imports the photo and removes the background automatically.

  2. On the image preview at the top, select Cutout.

  3. Select Restore and then draw over the parts of the background you want to keep. If Photoroom restores too much of the background, select Erase and paint over the parts you want to remove. Select Done when you are finished.

  4. Choose a template for the background.

  5. Use the editing features to change the image as required. For example, to add text or shapes or to change the color.

  6. Select Export.

  7. Use the export options to save and share your design.

  8. Select Done.


On Android

Keep original background from photo

Use the Original template to keep the entire background of a photo in your design:

  1. On the Create page, select Start from Photo and choose a photo to import.
    Photoroom imports the photo and removes the background automatically.

  2. Select the Original template.
    Photoroom adds a background layer to your design. It uses the original background from your photo on the background layer.

  3. Use the editing features to change the image as required. For example, to add text or shapes or to change the color.

  4. Select Export.

  5. Use the export options to save and share your design.

  6. Select Done.

  1. On the Create page, select Start from Photo and choose a photo to import.

  1. On the Create page, select Select a Photo and choose a photo to import.
    Photoroom imports the photo and removes the background automatically.

  2. In the Classics collection of templates, select Original image.
    Photoroom adds a background layer to your design. It uses the original background from your photo on the background layer.

  3. Use the editing features to change the image as required. For example, to add text or shapes or to change the color.

  4. Select Download to save your design. Your browser also downloads a local copy.

Keep part of the background from a photo

Use the Retouch tool to keep part of a photo's original background in your design.

  1. On the Create page, select Select a Photo and choose a photo to import.
    Photoroom imports the photo and removes the background automatically.

  2. Select a foreground layer.
    Do not select the background layer.

  3. In the foreground layer's settings, select Edit Cutout.

  4. Select Restore and then draw over the parts of the background you want to keep. If Photoroom restores too much of the background, select Erase and paint over the parts you want to remove. Select Confirm when you are finished.

  5. Choose a template for the background.

  6. Use the editing features to change the image as required. For example, to add text or shapes or to change the color.

  7. Select Download to save your design. Your browser also downloads a local copy.
