Add shadow to an object with a transparent background

Learn how to create a design that has an object with a shadow on a transparent background.

Did you know that you can have a foreground object with a shadow and a transparent background? The easiest way to create this type of design is to add the shadow when a white background is in place, and then erase the background when you have finished editing.

On iPhone and iPad

To create a design that has an object with a shadow and a transparent design on iPhone or iPad:

  1. On the Create page, select Start from Photo. Browse to the photo you want to use in your design and select it to upload it to Photoroom.

    Alternatively, you could select Your Content and choose an existing design to work with.

  2. If you uploaded a new image, select the classic white template. If you are editing an existing design, select Backgrounds and then Color and choose white.

  3. Select the object that will have the shadow.

  4. Select the Shadow slider to turn the shadow effect on.

  5. Use the Shadow settings to set the:

    1. Angle of the shadow

    2. Intensity of the shadow

    3. Amount of Blur on the shadow

    4. Color of the shadow

    5. Position of the shadow (select Move and then drag the shadow to the required position)

    6. Length of the shadow (select Shortness and use the slider to change the length).

  6. Select Done on the object layer.

  7. Select Backgrounds.

  8. Select Erase.

  9. Select Done on the background layer.

  10. Select Export. Use the export settings to save your design and share it. Make sure the design is set to download as a .png file, as this supports transparent backgrounds. You can change to .png by selecting Options and then choosing png as the file format.


On Android

To create a design that has an object with a shadow and a transparent design on an Android device:

  1. On the Create page, select Start from Photo. Browse to the photo you want to use in your design and select it to upload it to Photoroom.

    Alternatively, you could select Your Content and choose an existing design to work with.

  2. If you uploaded a new image, select the classic white template. If you are editing an existing design, select Backgrounds and then Color and choose white.

  3. Select the object that will have the shadow.

  4. Select the Shadow slider to turn the shadow effect on.

  5. Choose one of the preset positions for shadows, for example, Top 2 or Contact.

    If you choose Custom, you can edit the shadow by setting the:

    1. Intensity of the shadow

    2. Amount of Blur on the shadow

    3. Color of the shadow

    4. Position of the shadow (select Move or Move 3D and then drag the shadow to the required position)

    5. Length of the shadow (select Shortness and use the slider to change the length).

  6. Select Done on the object layer.

  7. Select Backgrounds.

  8. Select Erase.

  9. Select Done on the background layer.

  10. Select Export. Use the export settings to save your design and share it. Make sure the design is set to download as a .png file, as this supports transparent backgrounds. You can change to .png by selecting Options and then choosing png as the file format.


On the Web App

To create a design that has an object with a shadow and a transparent design on the Web App (desktop):

  1. On the Create page, select Select a Photo. Browse to the photo you want to use in your design and select it to upload it to Photoroom.

    Alternatively, you could select Designs and choose an existing design to work with.

  2. If you uploaded a new image, select the classic white template. If you are editing an existing design, select Background and then choose white in the Color and section.

  3. Select the object that will have the shadow.

  4. Select the Shadows slider to turn the shadow effect on.

  5. Use the Shadows settings to edit the:

    1. Intensity of the shadow

    2. Amount of Blur on the shadow

    3. Length of the shadow (select Shortness and use the slider to change the length).

    4. Color of the shadow

    5. Position of the shadow. Select Move and then choose 2D if you want to move the shadow left, right, up, or down. Or choose 3D if you want to change the perspective of the shadow. Drag the shadow to the position you want.

  6. Select the background.

  7. In the Background settings, select Erase.

  8. Select Download. Give your download file a File name and choose the Format (.png and .webp support transparent backgrounds).

  9. Select Download to save your design and download a copy in the browser.
