Upscale and redesign

Learn how to turn a low resolution photo into a stylish AI-enhanced design

Photoroom's Upscale tool can increase the resolution of your images and also redesign them intelligently, using AI. This is especially useful if upscaling alone did not create the quality of image you wanted.

For example, in the images below, the first image shows the result of upscale only (Enhance). It is better than the original photo used, but still has some soft edges and blur. The second image uses upscale and Transform and the AI keeps the original photo, upscales it, and then redraws some of the less defined areas. The third image uses Reimagine mode, where it creates a new HD image using the original photo as inspiration.

As the Transform and Reimagine modes redraw parts of the image, they often work better where you need a similar image and an exact likeness is not required.

Upscale is available on the Pro and Business plan. It is currently being progressively rolled out to customers on iOS using Photoroom version 606 or later. If you are using version 606 or later and do not have the Upscale tool, it should become available during August.

We are working on adding Upscale to Android and web app versions of Photoroom soon.

On iPhone and iPad

To upscale and redesign on the iPhone and iPad version of Photoroom:

  1. On the Create page, select Upscale.

  2. Upload the photo you want to upscale.

  3. Choose the upscaling and redesign mode you want:

    • Enhance
The AI will upscale and sharpen your image, but will not add creative details to it (see Upscale a photo to improve image quality).

    • Transform
The AI will do a "soft" redesign, where it upscales your image and adds creative details, while keeping the photo's main features.

    • Reimagine
The AI will create a new high resolution design that is inspired by your photo.

  4. Select Upscale.

  5. Use the Before and After slider to compare the old version to the new version.

  6. Select Use image.

Note: If you don't want the changes, select Reset.

  7. [Optional] Use the editing settings to make further changes to your design. For more details, see Introduction to editing in Photoroom.

  8. Select Export. Use the export settings to save and share your design. For more details, see Export a design.
