Virtual Model transforms clothing photos into a polished, photoshoot-ready image. It places your garments on realistic models and lets you mix and match different models, poses, and backgrounds to create a variety of standout visuals.

Note: Virtual Model images can have differences to the original photo, especially with more complex patterns, shapes and text. Be aware that Virtual Model images are "interpretations" of the source content and are not always exact matches.

In this article, we explain how to use Virtual Model on the Android version of Photoroom. If you are using the Web App or an Apple (iOS) device, see:

As there are many features you can use with Virtual Models, we have split the instructions into stages:

Stage 1: Upload clothing photos

Upload your clothing photos to the Virtual Model feature:

Before and after. Before image shows a single clothing photo and a highlighted plus arrow. After shows three clothing photos and a plus arrow.
  1. Select the Space you want to work in.

  2. Select AI tools.

  3. Select Virtual Model.

If you can't see the Virtual Model option, select the See more button to see a full list of the AI tools. Select Virtual Model from there.

  4. Choose a clothing photo to upload.

  5. [Optional] Select the + icon and upload another clothing photo. By uploading multiple clothing photos, you can show an entire outfit on a Virtual Model.

Stage 2: Tell Photoroom what you want

Use the settings to tell Photoroom what you want in your image.

Series of images showing the Virtual Model settings, including model selection, background selection, and pose selection.

  1. [Optional] Enter a description in the prompt field. For example, "Add window in background".

  2. [Optional] Add or remove clothing images:

    • Select + and upload another image.

    • Select X on an image to remove it.

  3. Select Model and choose a Virtual Model from the list.

To use your own model, select Custom and upload a model photo.

  4. Select Background and choose a category of AI background.

To use your own background, select + and then upload a background photo. Alternatively, select Camera to take a photo to upload or use Generate an image with AI and then use an AI Tool to create an image.

  5. Select Pose and choose a preferred position for the model.

  6. Use Size to set the dimensions of the image. Choose from Square, Portrait, or Landscape sizes.

  7. Use Brand to choose whether the brand description for the Space will influence the AI:

    • Apply brand style - Turn it on if you want the Virtual Model AI to be influenced by the brand description. Turn it off to ignore the brand description.

    • Brand description - Shows the current brand description (if any) for the Space. This comes from the Brand Kit. If you make changes to the description here, they are also made to the brand kit and will affect the entire Space.

  8. Select the quality of image you want:

    • Standard
1k resolution, requires Pro subscription, consumes less AI credits.

    • Advanced
2k resolution, requires Max subscription, consumes more AI credits.

    • Premium
4k+ resolution, requires Ultra subscription, consumes most AI credits.

  9. Select Generate image.

  10. [Optional] Use the settings again and generate more images until you have an image you are happy with.

Tip: You can make changes to the original prompt or use the Edit with AI feature. Edit with AI is available from the context menu for each generated image.

Stage 3: Generate images from different angles [optional]

You can generate more versions of an image, with the model and scene shown from different angles:

3 images showing a woman in a red suit shown from different angles.

  1. Select the context menu for a generated Virtual Model image.

  2. Select the Other angles option.

Tip: To use several of the different angle images, select one and export it (see Stage 4). Then close it and return to Virtual Model. The previously generated images are still available (unless deleted by someone else). Select one of the other angles to export.

Stage 4: Final edits and save

When you have a Virtual Model you are happy with, select it and follow the steps below:

  1. [Optional] Save your design without making any additional changes:

    1. Select Save to download the image.

    2. Select Done.
You can ignore the remaining steps in this section.

  2. [Optional] Use the Edit with AI field to make changes. Enter a description and select the arrow button to generate a new image.

  3. [Optional] Select Open in editor to use the main editor to make changes:

    1. Wait for Photoroom to remove the background automatically or select Skip background removal to keep the background.

    2. Use the layer settings to make changes to the foreground layer and then select Done.

    3. Use the editor settings to make changes, such as insert graphics or text or choose a different background.

To learn about using the main editor, see the editing articles.

    4. Select Export to save your design as an image file on your device.
The export screen also has options for sharing your design and using it to create a short video.

    5. Select Done to exit. Photoroom saves your design automatically.

Tip: To use your virtual model design with a template, export the design as an image file. Then select New design and import the image file. When the image has imported, select a template from the list. Photoroom opens your design in the editor with the template applied. You can use the editing features to make further changes if needed.
