Erase objects from images with Retouch (Android)

How to use Retouch to erase objects from photos. Android.

Written by Craig Wright

Use Photoroom's Retouch tool to remove objects from photos and other images. It works like an eraser:

  • You "paint" over the object you want to remove

  • Photoroom erases it and blends the background so it looks like the object was never there.

Image shows before and after. Before is a photo of a bag and a water bottle on a table. After is just the bag on the table. Retouch has erased the bottle.

Note: Retouch is available as a dedicated standalone tool (for new designs) and as a feature within the editor (for existing designs). In this article, we cover both ways of using Retouch for erasing.

Steps

To use Retouch to erase, there are two stages:

  1. Access Retouch.

There are two ways to access it:

    • Use the standalone Retouch tool (requires you to upload an image)

    • Open a design in the editor and use Retouch in the layer settings (for editing new or existing designs)

  2. Use the Retouch settings to erase.

For instructions, see the sections below.

Access the Retouch tool

To use the standalone Retouch tool to remove objects from a photo:

  1. Select the Space you want to work in.

  2. Select AI tools.

  3. Select Retouch.

  4. Upload the image you want to edit.

Next: Use Retouch to erase (see the section below).

Access Retouch in the editor

To access Retouch while editing a new or existing design:

  1. Select the Space you want to work in.

  2. Create a new design and open it in the editor.

Alternatively, select Content and select an existing design to edit.

  3. Select a foreground layer.

  4. Select Retouch.

Next: Use Retouch to erase (see the section below).

Use Retouch to erase

When you have opened the Retouch feature:

  1. Select the Erase tab.

  2. Use the slider to set the brush size.

Tip: Choose a brush size that will let you paint over the object you want to erase without painting over other objects.

  3. Paint over the object you want to erase.

Photoroom may shrink the object or only partially remove it rather than erasing it completely. If this happens, keep painting over it until it's gone.

  4. When you are happy with the image, select Done.

Photoroom opens the image in the editor.

  5. [Optional] Use the editor to make further changes, such as adding text or graphics.

  6. [Optional] Select Save to save the image as a design in Photoroom and download it to your device.

  7. Select X or Close design to exit the editor.
