Learn how to use Retouch to erase objects and add new objects with AI.

Use Photoroom's Retouch tool to erase unwanted objects from photos or add new ones.

Before and after. Before shows a bag and a bottle on a table. After shows the bag, but the bottle is gone while the image remains looking realistic.

How it works:

  1. You set Retouch to Erase mode or Add mode

  2. You set the Brush size and paint over the area you want to change.

  3. [Add mode only] You describe the change you want Photoroom to make.

Photoroom then redraws the selected area, erasing or adding to it, depending on your choice.

Availability

  • Available on iOS, Android, and Web App

  • Does not use AI credits

  • Unlimited, subject to fair use.

  • Add mode is only available on iOS and Android.

Ways to access Retouch

Retouch is available as:

  • A standalone tool

  • A layer editing feature in the main editor.

If you are working on Batch or product catalog (for Shopify) images, Retouch is available if you open an image in the main editor.

For step-by-step instructions, see Workflows in Related content (below).

Retouch settings

When you access the Retouch tool, it is in Erase mode by default. Use the following settings to switch modes, select the area to change, and describe the change you want.

  • Brush size (slider)

  • Erase

  • Add

  • Prompt

Brush size

Use the slider to change the cursor's brush size. This can help you paint over the area you want to edit more easily.

Reduce the brush size to paint over the image with more precision

Increase the brush size to paint over larger areas

Erase

Use to switch to Erase mode, where Retouch will remove objects from your image.

In Erase mode, paint over an area you want to remove. Photoroom will delete the object and redraw the background so that it looks like the object was never there.

Add

Use to switch to Add mode, where Retouch will add objects to your image rather than erasing them. Add is iOS and Android only.

Once you have switched to Add mode, paint over an area to edit and then use a prompt to describe the change you want. Select the arrow button or generate to redraw the area.

Prompt

Only available in Add mode. Use the prompt to describe the changes you want Photoroom to add to the selected area of the image.
