Expand the background to fill the canvas on a batch of images (Web App)

How to make your batch images expand to fill the canvas space. Web App.

Use Expand to fill unused canvas space around an image's background. This is useful when an image is smaller than the canvas and has unwanted transparent edges. Expand uses AI to generate more background to fill the space.

Two images. One shows a woman on a chair and the left and right sides of the image are transparent as the image doesn't fit the canvas. The other image is the same picture but the background is expanded to fill the canvas area.

Expand is available from the image tile's pill menu for backgrounds that are:

  • Not a single color

  • Smaller than the canvas.

Steps (Web App)

To expand the background for a batch of images:

Note: These steps are for a batch that has one or more images with a background that does not fill the canvas. To create a batch, see Create a batch of images (Web App).

  1. Select the background of an image that does not fill the canvas.
Photoroom displays the pill menu for the image and it has an Expand option.

Troubleshooting

Expand option not shown

If the Expand option is not shown on the pill menu:

  • Make sure that the background is an image, either the original image background, a custom image background, or an AI-generated background. Expand is not available for single color backgrounds.

  • Make sure you have selected the background and not a foreground layer. The Expand option is on the pill menu for the image and does not appear on the pill menu of foreground layers.

  • Check whether the background already fills the canvas. Expand is only available when the canvas has unused space. In some cases the unused space is less than a pixel, so the canvas can look full when it is not.
