A popular use of Photoroom is to replace the background of photos with a white background. It's great for product photos and you can add shadows for a more realistic effect.

If you want a transparent background rather than a white background, see Transparent backgrounds.

Note: This article is an introduction to creating simple backgrounds for your designs. If you are on the Pro plan and you want to apply a background to many images at once, see Edit multiple photos at once in Batch Mode.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. On the Create page, select Start from photo and then choose a photo to import.

Photoroom imports your photo and automatically removes the background. If the foreground object is not exactly how you want it, use the Cutout feature to edit it. For instructions, see Add and remove parts of an image with Edit Cutout.

Alternatively, select Your Designs and then select one of your existing designs to work with.

  2. Choose the White template. This is a pre-made template that is included in the Photoroom library and it adds a white background layer to your design.

When you choose a template, Photoroom displays your design in the editor.

  3. [Optional] Select the foreground object in your image and move it to the position you want. When you select the object, its layer settings are shown.

  4. [Optional] Select the foreground object and use the layer settings to edit the foreground object. For example, turn the Shadow feature on to add a shadow and then use the settings to style the shadow. Select Done to close the foreground object layer's settings.

  5. Select Export.

  6. [Optional] Use the export settings to change the file name and format and choose the workspace where your design will be saved.

  7. Select Save to Gallery to save your design to your phone. Photoroom also saves your design in the selected workspace.

To learn more about the export feature, see Export a design.

  8. Select Done.
