Learn how to swap the background of a design with a new, AI-generated Instant Background

You can replace the background of a design with a new, AI-generated Instant Background. For instructions, select the link for your device:


On iPhone, iPad, and Android

To replace a background (regular or Instant Background) with a new Instant Background:

  1. On the Create page, select Your Content and then select the design you want to edit.

  2. Select Backgrounds.

  3. Either:

    1. Search for a background by entering a description in the search field at the top.

    2. Choose an Instant Background from the various categories.

    3. Select the edit icon in the top corner and enter a custom prompt. To learn about custom prompts, see Create your own Instant Backgrounds with custom prompts.

  4. When you select a background, Photoroom generates 4 images. You can either select one of those or select Generate 4 more to create some more.

  5. [Optional] Select Change size and choose the size and orientation for your design.

  6. Select the Instant Background that you want to use.

  7. Select the share icon. From here, you can save or share your design. Photoroom also auto-saves it to Your Designs.

  8. Select Done.


On Web App

To replace a background (regular or Instant Background) with a new Instant Background:

  1. On the Create page, select Your Content and then select the design you want to edit.

  2. [Optional] Select Resize and choose the size and orientation for your design.

  3. Select Instant Backgrounds.

  4. Either:

    1. Search for a background by entering a description in the search field at the top.

    2. Choose an Instant Background from the various categories.

    3. Select the edit icon in the top corner and enter a custom prompt. To learn about custom prompts, see Create your own Instant Backgrounds with custom prompts.

  5. When you select a background, Photoroom generates 4 images. You can either select one of those or select Generate 4 more to create some more.

  6. Select the Instant Background that you want to use.

  7. Select Download to save your changes and download a local copy.
