How to use AI Shadows

How to use the AI Shadows tool to add realistic shadows to your designs.

Written by Craig Wright

Use the AI Shadows tool to add realistic AI-generated shadow effects to your images. The AI Shadows help to make your products look more three-dimensional, especially against light backgrounds.

In this article, we provide a general overview of the tool and explain its settings.

How AI Fashion Models works:

  1. You provide a source image.

  2. You use the AI Shadows settings to create the shadow you want.

  3. Photoroom generates an image based on the source image, the chosen settings, and a prompt.

  4. You can then use the generated image as is or you can open it in the main editor to make further changes. You can also generate variations, if needed.

For step-by-step instructions, see Workflows in Related content (below).

Availability

Ways to access AI Shadows

AI Shadows is available:

  • As a standalone tool

  • As an option in the main editor

  • From AI tools in Batch

  • From AI tools in Photoroom for Shopify.

Settings for AI Shadows

AI Shadows can have two categories of settings:

  • Presets
Contains the basic AI Shadows options: None, Soft, Hard, Floating.

  • Advanced
Contains the more complex settings for controlling the shadow. These are currently only available on the Web App version of Photoroom.

The various settings are explained in the sections below.

None

Removes all shadow effects.

None is a Preset shadow option and is only shown on the Web App version of Photorom.

Soft

Use to add a diffused, light shadow.

Image shows two plates, one with a soft shadow, the other with a strong dark shadow

Soft is a Preset shadow option.

Hard

Use to add a strong, dark shadow.

Hard is a Preset shadow option.

Floating

Use to add a shadow below the product to make it look as if it is floating above the ground. Photoroom analyzes the image to determine where the ground is most likely to be, based on the content of the image.

Floating is a Preset shadow option.

Shadow hardness

Use Shadow hardness to fine-tune the density of the shadow.

  • Low produces a softer shadow that is more diffused, with less defined edges

  • Hard produces a dense, dark shadow with sharp edges.

Shadow hardness is an Advanced setting.

Shadow intensity

Use Shadow intensity to fine-tune the darkness of the shadow.

  • Light produces a weaker shadow, with more shades of gray and less black

  • Dark adds more black to the shadow to make it darker.

Image shows two plates, one with a light shadow, one with a dark shadow

Shadow intensity is an Advanced setting.

Shadow direction

Use Shadow direction to control which side of the product the shadow appears on.

The image shows two plates. One has a shadow to the left. One has a shadow to the lower right.

The slider represents a 360° view of the object. It starts at back and circles around past the left, front, and right sides before ending at back again. Set the value to choose the side you want.

For example, set it to near the front to have the shadow coming towards us, as if the light source was behind the object.

Shadow direction is an Advanced setting.

Shadow spread

Use Shadow spread to fine-tune the size of the shadow:

  • Short produces a narrower, more compact shadow

  • Long produces a more stretched, wider shadow.

3 chair images. Image 1 is a chair against a white background. Image 2 is the same chair with a shadow beneath it. Image 3 is the same chair with a shadow to make it look like it is floating.

Shadow spread is an Advanced setting.

Product orientation

Use Product orientation to set the position of the product. This affects whether the shadow makes the product look like it is laying flat on a surface or stood upright on its bottom edge.

Product orientation is an Advanced setting.
