To upload an image and change its background to an AI-generated one, use the standalone AI Backgrounds tool. It lets you upload an image and then choose or describe the type of background you want. Photoroom then creates the image for you.

In this article, we provide step-by-step instructions for using the standalone AI Backgrounds tool on iOS. For details about how AI Backgrounds works and the settings that are available, see How to use AI Backgrounds.

Note: AI Backgrounds is also available as an in-editor tool, to use while editing a design (see the workflow articles in Related content at the end).

Steps (iOS)

To create a design that has an AI Background:

  1. Select the Space you want to work in.

  2. Select AI Tools.

  3. Select AI Backgrounds.

  4. Upload an image or choose an existing image to use as the Source image.

To learn more about selecting an image, see How to add or choose a source image (iOS).

Photoroom creates 2 images with AI Backgrounds. If you are happy to use one of these images, skip ahead to step 6.

  5. To generate images with different backgrounds:

    • Use the AI Background settings to configure the image. You can set the AI model, fine-tune or change the subject, choose a background theme and more.

    • Enter a description of the background you want in the prompt field. Select the arrow button to generate.

Note: AI Backgrounds can use a combination of a text prompt and a chosen Background theme. For details, see How the AI Background prompt works.

  6. When you have an image you are happy with, select it.

  7. Select one of:

    • Open in editor
To open the design in the main editor where you can make changes, such as add text or other images to the design.

    • Save
To download the image as an image file.
