Photoroom's AI Backgrounds lets you use AI to create any background you want. There are several ways to use it:

  • Choose a suggested AI Background from our provided themes

  • Upload an image to use as inspiration for the AI Background

  • Use a prompt to describe the background you want

  • Use a prompt to add objects to the background or remove unwanted parts of your image.

In this article, we provide a general overview of the tool and explain its settings.
For step-by-step instructions, see Workflows in Related content (below).

Availability

  • Available on all platforms, but Web App has different prompt options

  • Requires AI credits.

Ways to access AI Backgrounds

AI Backgrounds is available in many places in Photoroom.

  • As a standalone tool from the AI tools menu

  • In the main editor, from the Backgrounds settings

  • As part of the workflow when creating a new design

  • From the AI tools menu in a Batch of images

  • From the AI tools menu in the product catalog editor.

Settings for AI Backgrounds

AI Backgrounds has some settings that are common across all versions of Photoroom and some that are platform-specific. We describe them all in the sections below.

  • Source image

  • AI Model

  • Subject

  • Background

  • Search

  • Prompt

  • Create a background

Source image

AI Backgrounds needs a source image to use as a starting point. Depending on where you accessed the AI tool, you can:

  • Upload a photo

  • Select from recent uploads or AI generated images

  • Choose an image that already exists in Photoroom

  • Take a photo and upload it (mobile only)

  • Use an AI tool to generate an image (mobile only)

  • Select an image in a Batch

  • Select a product image in the Product editor (integration, such as Photoroom for Shopify).

AI Model

Photoroom lets you choose from a range of different AI models for generating your AI Backgrounds. The early AI models (v2, v3) produce lower resolution images but consume fewer AI credits than the more sophisticated Studio models. The Studio models produce higher resolution outputs.

To learn more about the AI models, see AI models for AI backgrounds.

Subject

Subject is only available on iOS and Android. Use it to:

  • Access the Edit Cutout tool, which you can use to erase or restore parts of the original image.

  • Change the source image

  • Make the source image larger or smaller on the canvas. Use the slider to change the size.

To learn more about Edit Cutout, see What is Edit Cutout?

Background

Use to choose a background. There are options for:

  • Choosing a suggested background

  • Choosing a background from our library of preset background images

  • Uploading your own custom background image to use as inspiration

  • Searching for a background image on Unsplash.

When you choose one of the backgrounds, Photoroom generates a new image. It uses your choice as inspiration for the background, but it may not be an exact match. This is because Photoroom tries to make the generated image look as realistic as possible. To do that, it analyzes your image, including colors used and lighting, and then generates a background that complements the image.

Search

Use the search to look for images by name or category. Enter a search term and Photoroom will search for matching images. It searches in:

  • Photoroom's library of backgrounds

  • Unsplash for images shared publicly by Unsplash users.

When you see a background you like, select it. Photoroom will use that image as inspiration.

Note: Search can also give you the option to create your own background. If you select it, the prompt is filled with your search term automatically.

Prompt

Use the prompt to describe the background you want Photoroom to generate.

For tips on how to write prompts, see Write more effective prompts for AI.

Create a background

This option is only available on the Web App. It lets you create a custom background by using one of three tabs:

  • Image
Use an image file as inspiration for the background. Upload an image or search for an image on Unsplash.

  • Assisted
A prompt with a set structure that provides the essential information Photoroom needs:

Your subject on [a surface] with [details] in the background

Complete the prompt by typing in your own words or selecting from the suggested words.

  • Manual
A free-form prompt that works in the same way as the Prompt field.

Photoroom will generate a new image with a background based on your image or text prompt.

After generating an image

When you have generated an image with a background that you like, you can:

  • Save the image

  • Download the image

  • Open the image in the main editor to make further changes

  • Use the Batch editor to make further changes (Batch only)

  • Use the product catalog editor to make further changes (Product catalog only).
