Use the Background option in the Product editor to change the background of product images. You can change the background for one product image, several images, or all images.

3 images of a bag. Each image has a different background.

Note: We assume you have already connected Photoroom to your store and that you have products in your Product catalog.

Steps (Web App)

There are three types of background you can use for product images:

  • AI Backgrounds

  • Static image backgrounds

  • Solid color backgrounds.

For step-by-step instructions on each type, see the sections below.

Apply an AI Background to product images

You can use Photoroom's AI to generate background images for your product images. The backgrounds will have a similar look and feel, but won't be exactly the same. This is because the AI adapts each background to suit the colors and lighting in each individual image.

  1. Open your Product Catalog and select the product you want to edit.

  2. Select the images you want to have new AI-generated backgrounds.

To learn about selecting images, see How to select images using the Product Catalog Editor.

  3. Select Background.

  4. Make sure Remove original backgrounds is on.

  5. Select AI.

  6. Select the AI Model you want to use. Studio often produces better results, but it uses more AI credits than v3 and v2.

  7. Use the AI Backgrounds features to tell Photoroom what you want to see as the background.

    You can:

    • Enter a description in the prompt field.

    • Select + Background and then:

      • Pick a theme from the available categories.

      • Search for an image on Unsplash (v3 and v2 only).

      • Select Start with and Upload your own image.

      • Select Start with and choose one of your Recent AI Backgrounds.

  8. Select the arrow button to generate.

  9. Select the generated background you want to use.

  10. [Optional] Use Batch consistency to control the amount of variation in the backgrounds. This option only appears after you have selected one of the generated images.

Turn Batch consistency on for more uniform backgrounds with little variation. Turn it off for backgrounds that are similar, but may vary more.

  11. Select Apply to confirm your choice and start generating the backgrounds. Applying the backgrounds uses AI credits.

  12. [Optional] Use the editor to make further changes, such as adding text, graphics, or shapes.

Note: Images you add with Search or Upload guide the AI. Photoroom uses them as inspiration for the background it generates, not as the background itself.
