This article explains how to start a new design on the Android version of Photoroom. It includes instructions for:

  • Uploading a photo

  • Removing the photo's background

  • Choosing the starting point for your design

  • Opening the design in the editor.

Note: If you are using the iOS or Web App version of Photoroom, see these articles instead:

On iPhone and iPad

To start a new design:

  1. Select the Space you want to work in.

  2. On the Home screen, select Start from Photo.

Alternatively, select New design on the Content screen.

  3. Upload a photo to add to your design.

Alternatively, you can use Generate an image with AI to get Photoroom to create an image for you. You will need AI credits and you can create the image using any of the available AI tools.

  4. When you upload a photo, Photoroom automatically starts removing its background.

    Either:

    • Wait for Photoroom to remove the background and ignore the Skip background removal option. You can restore the background later or replace it with a different image or color.

    • Select Skip background removal to keep the entire image. When Photoroom adds it to your design, the whole image is on a single layer. This can make it more difficult to edit the background and foreground objects separately.

  5. This step only applies if you allowed Photoroom to remove the background.

Use the settings to choose the type of background you want. You can choose from:

    • Suggested edits
These are recommended designs that you can use as the starting point for your own design.

    • Custom templates
These are templates that you or your colleagues have made. Each template contains a background and other design elements. Your new design will contain your photo image plus the content from your chosen template.

    • Photoroom templates (pre-made templates)
These are templates that Photoroom's designers have created. There are many different categories to choose from, including templates sized specifically for social media and marketplace posts. Your new design will contain your photo image plus the content from you chosen template.

    • Edit with AI
You can use this prompt to describe the background you want and changes to the image you uploaded.

  6. [Optional] Use the editor to make changes to your design, for example, to fine-tune its appearance or add text or graphics.

You can find information on most of the editing tools and AI features in the Help Center (see Related articles at the end of this article).

  7. Select Export to save your design in Photoroom and as an image file on your device. You can also use the Export settings to share your design with others.

  8. Select Done to exit.
