The Flat lay tool uses AI to turn a photo of clothing into a high quality image of the clothing laid flat. Just upload your photo, choose a size, and let the AI create flat images. They are perfect for presenting clothes in marketplace listings and on social media.

Note: When using Flat lay, be aware that the generated images are similar to the photo, but may not be an exact match.

To create an image that shows clothes laid flat:

(Video is edited to speed up image generation).

  1. Select the Space you want to work in.

  2. Select AI Tools.

  3. Select Flat lay.

If you don't see the Flat Lay option, select the See all button to get a full list of the AI tools.

  4. Set the Size of the image that Photoroom will create. Choose from:

    • Square

    • Portrait (3:2 ratio)

    • Landscape (3:2 ratio).

  5. Select Subject and upload a clothing photo.

Tip: You can use any product photo! This includes images that you've created with Photoroom AI features, such as Virtual Model, and then exported as image files.

  6. Select the arrow button to generate 2 images.

  7. [Optional] Hover the cursor over an image to reveal its context menu. Select More angles to generate images from a different viewpoint.

  8. [Optional] Select the context menu and use Change something to make changes to an image. Describe the changes you want and then select the arrow button to generate.

  9. Either:

    • SeIect one of the images to use it as a starting point. You only need the image to be close to what you want, as you can use AI to edit it later. This is often more effective than generating completely different AI images.

    • Select the arrow button to generate more alternatives. When you have an image you can use, select it.

  10. Use Remove background to include or exclude the background from the design.

If you remove the background, you will get a design that has a white background layer and your clothing image on another layer. Later, you'll be able to add a background of your own choice, such as a color background or an AI background.

If you keep the background, you will get the entire image on a single layer in your design.

  11. [Optional] To make changes to the image:

    • Select Change something and then describe the change you want to make an alteration using AI.

    • Use Retouch to remove parts of the image. Draw over the area you want to delete. Use the slider to change the brush size. Select Confirm when you have finished.

To learn more about Retouch, see Remove unwanted objects with the Retouch tool.

    • Use Edit cutout to remove or restore parts of the image. Select Erase or Restore and then draw over the areas you want to remove or add back in to the image.

Edit cutout is a common editing feature and is only available if you removed the background. To learn about it, see Add and remove parts of an image with Edit cutout.

    • Use Resize to change the dimensions for the image. When you select Resize, the image is shown in the editor. From there, you can set a different size for the image.

  12. [Optional] Select Download to download the image without making further changes to it.

  13. [Optional] Select Use this image to open it in the editor.

You can then use the editing features to make additional changes, such as add text, shapes, backgrounds and other design elements. To learn how to use the editing features, see Features and tools.

  14. Either:

    • Close the Flat Lay dialog to exit and save.

    • Select Home to exit and save. Home is only available if you chose to edit the image in the main editor.

Tip: To use the Flat lay image with a template, export it as an image file. Then import the image file as a new design and Photoroom will let you choose a template as the background. To learn how to import the image as a new design, see Start a new design (Web App).
