Remove a background

Learn how to use Photoroom's Remove Background feature

Quickly remove the background from your photos with Photoroom's Background Removal feature. It's fast and very precise!

On iPhone and iPad

To remove a background from a photo:​

  1. Select Content.

  2. Select the workspace you want to work in.

  3. Select + New design.

    Alternatively, select + Start from Photo on the home page. Another way is to select Editing tools and then Remove Background.

  4. Provide an image and wait for Photoroom to remove its background.

    There are several ways to provide an image:

    • Camera roll
      Choose a photo from your device's camera roll.

    • Camera
      Take a photo with your device's camera.

    • Files
      Choose an image file from your device's folders.

    • Generate an image with AI.
      Use Photoroom's AI to create any image you can imagine. To learn about creating AI images, see Create an AI Image.

    Tip: You can use the Cutout feature to refine the edges of the remaining parts of the photo. To learn more, see How to use Assisted Cutout on mobile devices.

  5. Choose a replacement background. You can choose from:

    • Classic backgrounds
      Choose a simple background, such as black, white, transparent, or the original background from your image.

    • AI Backgrounds
      Use AI to create any background you can imagine. Describe the scene in a prompt and leave the AI to create the background.

    • Your templates
      Use a template from your own collection. To learn more, see Templates and Create a custom template.

    • Photoroom ready-made templates

      Photoroom provides many ready-made templates that you can use as the background. Some templates also include foreground layers that you can edit. There are templates for special events, social media, and various themes. Use them as they are or apply them and then make changes later.

  6. [Optional] When you choose a background, Photoroom opens your image as a design in the editor. Use the editor to make changes to your design, such as move layers, change colors, and add text.

  7. Select Export.​
    Photoroom saves your design and downloads it to your device as an image file. You also have options to share your design.

  8. Select X to exit the export settings.

  9. Select X to exit the editor and save your design.

You now have the image as an image file that has downloaded on your device. You also have the image as a saved design in Photoroom (see your Designs).


On Android

To remove a background from a photo on an Android device:

  1. Select Content.

  2. Select the workspace you want to work in.

  3. Select + New design.

    Alternatively, select + Start from Photo on the home page. Another way is to select Editing tools and then Remove Background.

  4. Provide an image and wait for Photoroom to remove its background.

You now have the image as an image file that has downloaded on your device. You also have the image as a saved design in Photoroom (see your Designs).


On Web App

To use the Web App to remove the background of a photo:

  1. Select the workspace you want to work in.

  2. Select Create new.

  3. To get Photoroom to remove the background of an image, either:

    • Select Select a photo and upload an image file.

    • Select Remove background and upload an image file.

  4. [Optional] By default, Photoroom removes the background of your image and replaces it with a white background. If you wish, you can use the editor to make changes to your design, such as choose a different template for the background, move layers, change colors, and add text.

  5. Select the Download icon to download a local copy of your image. Enter a filename, choose the file type and then select Download. The image file downloads in your browser.

  6. Select Home to save your design and exit the editor.
